Open Morning for English

Last Thursday, we proudly hosted our Open Morning for English, providing families with the opportunity to experience firsthand our approach to teaching English, grounded in evidence from the Science of Learning. Over the past three years, we have strengthened our whole-school approach to English through extensive research, professional learning and classroom implementation, with a strong focus on explicit and responsive teaching.

Thank you to the many families who attended the morning. The children were thrilled to welcome their parents and carers into their classrooms and share their learning. Being able to showcase our whole-school approach and the learning taking place each day is an important part of strengthening the partnership between home and school.

Our approach places a strong emphasis on building knowledge and skills through explicit teaching, purposeful practice and many opportunities for all learners to participate. In the early years, our evidence-informed approach through InitiaLit supports learners to develop the foundational knowledge and skills they need to become confident readers, writers and speakers.

In the upper year levels, learners are explicitly taught new knowledge and skills and supported to connect new learning with what they already know. Our Library Captains confidently shared with visitors the key elements of our Years 3–6 approach, including the introduction of novel studies this year within our structured Language and Literacy, and Literature learning blocks.

The feedback from families highlighted the impact they observed in classrooms, with parents commenting on the high levels of learner engagement and expectations, teacher scaffolding that supported learners to deepen their thinking, increased and inclusive opportunities for participation, clear and concise instruction, and the structured nature of learning. Families also commented positively on the strong foundations being developed through our approach and the confidence they could see in their children as learners.

We hope that by seeing English learning in action, conversations about English at home will be further enriched and families will gain an even deeper understanding of the teaching practices that support learner confidence, engagement, growth and success.
