Eastern Regional AFL Championships

Coming out of the change rooms, the boys were pumped for all their games ahead. Strong tap outs from Jeral Haj and centre clearances from Olly Oldfield and the midfielders were essential to moving the ball towards our forward 50. The durability of Rory Stone in the forward proved to be an asset as his contested marks and movement up forward gave the boys a strong target to kick towards. Throughout the day, our boys went hard at the ball and made strong tackles, some resulting in questionable free kicks  against them but this did not soften their spirit nor their determination to make tackles on the opposition with the ball. 

Our AFL boys team won their three round robin games in their pool leading them to a semi final. Our semi final match was tough but an epic win with a final score of 4.4.28 to 1.3.9 . At this point the fatigue and injuries started to set in for our player. The boys tried their hardest to push through it but lost in the grand final, coming runners up in the Eastern Regional Championships.

Out of about 450 schools across the eastern part of Melbourne, our boys team are the 2nd best side out of all of those schools. After reviewing back through the archives of our Winter Sports championships, this is the highest our school has ever made it in AFL Boys football, truly history in the making for our boy and school. Our team showed great teamwork, sportsmanship under their coaching parent helpers George Azzam, Shane Oldfield and Nadim Haj. We thank them especially for their support along the boys Winter Sport journey. Thank you to the parents who assisted with driving players and for coming to support them as a goal umpire, scorer on the day or providing oranges for the boys. It was amazing to see such a strong St Simon parent group cheering our boys on from the boundary line.

Eastern Regional Soccer Championships

Congratulations to our St Simon Girls Soccer team that came third in the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Soccer Championships!! 

The girls went into each game with determination and grit, pressuring the ball at every opportunity in their position. Their key gameplay for the day was to use the wings to their advantage and hold position of the back line when defending our goal line. The girls showed great teamwork, a highlight was Eleni Pouris scoring two goals in the first game which boosted the team's morale. There were some great dribbling, crosses and shots on goal from Gaby Saggin whose offensive movement down the wing gained us possession advantages  and great scoring opportunities with our forwards. 

Our girls team won two out of their three round robin games advancing them to a semi final. In their semi final, our team made a valiant effort against the top side but unfortunately lost 2-0. Despite the loss, the girls made a concerted effort to finish on a positive winning their consolation final 2-0. Overall, they should be proud of their performance as a team at this level of competition.
