"Curriculum should help children make deeper and fuller understanding of their own experience."

—  Lilian Katz

As we move into the second half of the year, I hope all students have had the opportunity to carefully review their Semester 1 reports. The start of Term 3 offers a valuable pivot point to reflect on growth, reset routines, and set clear goals for Semester 2.

Winning in the Margins: Small Habits, Big Results

This semester, we are encouraging students to focus on the power of marginal gains—the idea that extraordinary progress rarely comes from overnight overhauls, but rather from making small, deliberate improvements in the everyday "margins" of study.

  • Marginal Review: Spending just 5 minutes reviewing class notes at the end of each day rather than waiting until exam week.
  • Marginal Time: Utilising small pockets of downtime during homeroom, study periods, or commutes to organise planners and check feedback.
  • Targeting Feedback Margins: Acting on specific teacher comments from Semester 1 assessments rather than looking only at the overall letter grade or mark.

Key Areas of Focus for Semester 2

When engaging with report feedback and planning for Term 3, we encourage students to keep these principles in mind:

  • Where Can I Improve? Viewing challenges as opportunities for growth is essential. Identify specific areas where you can make marginal gains, whether that's time management, understanding complex concepts, or refining exam techniques. Brigidine continues to offer excellent resources to support student growth, such as Big Sister Tutoring for Maths and English; as well as after-school study sessions in the library (Mondays and Wednesdays).
  • Create a Revised Study Plan: With past feedback and reflections in mind, develop a revised study plan that leverages your strengths and targets specific growth areas. Setting specific, measurable, and time-bound goals will keep you focused and motivated. Parents play a vital role here by helping monitor progress and encouraging a balanced approach between academics and extracurricular commitments.
  • Balance Academics with Well-being: Academic success is important, but mental health and physical well-being are equally crucial. Regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and mindfulness activities significantly enhance overall performance and happiness. Remember to take breaks, engage in hobbies, and spend quality time with friends and family to maintain a healthy balance. A healthy mind and body are fundamental for both academic success and personal growth.

Subject Selection Progress

It is an exciting time for our students in Years 8 and 10!

Year 10 students have recently submitted their subject selection preferences for Year 11, marking a significant milestone in their academic journey. Similarly, Year 8 students recently attended their subject selection evening as they begin shaping their future learning pathways.

NAPLAN & Data-Informed Learning

Families of Years 7 and 9 students should have received their NAPLAN results. These results offer valuable insights for parents and teachers, demonstrating how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time, both individually and against national standards.

Over the coming semester, Brigidine teachers will be meticulously reviewing NAPLAN results alongside other data points, including summative and formative assessments, Allwell Testing, and classroom observations. This comprehensive approach allows us to identify individual student strengths, target areas requiring further development, and ensure every student is supported to achieve their best in Semester 2.

Looking Ahead: Embracing Magis

As we launch into Semester 2, our community aligns with the broader vision of Sydney Catholic Schools through the principle of Magis—a Latin phrase meaning "the more" or "the greater." Magis is not about doing everything or striving for perfection; rather, it invites us to ask: How can we strive for greater excellence, deeper purpose, and fuller engagement in all that we do?

When our students focus on making small, deliberate improvements in the margins of their daily habits, they are living out the spirit of Magis. By striving for "the more" in their effort, character, and learning, they position themselves to thrive throughout Term 3 and beyond. Let’s work together to make the second half of the year not only about achieving academic goals; but also about nurturing our well-being, striving for Magis, and enjoying a well-rounded school experience.
