NAIDOC WEEK

At GSSC, we celebrated NAIDOC Week during the final week of Term 2 with a range of meaningful activities that gave students the opportunity to connect with and celebrate First Nations culture.

Throughout the week, students took part in a variety of hands-on activities, including traditional weaving, painting, clay turtle making, language bingo and emu feather necklace making. Each activity encouraged learning, creativity and a deeper appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

One of the highlights of the week was the annual Staff vs Student Buroinjin match, with staff proudly holding onto the title for another year in a fun and spirited game enjoyed by all.

Another highlight of the week was a special lunch prepared and hosted by our Year 11 and 12 Cookery students for the Ngarri Ngarri Team and staff. Using a range of locally sourced and Indigenous ingredients, students created a delicious menu that celebrated native flavours while showcasing their culinary skills and hospitality.

The week concluded with a morning tea and Smoking Ceremony led by local Elder Uncle Dixie, followed by our whole-school NAIDOC Assembly. During the assembly, students and staff heard an inspiring address from guest speaker Jarvis Atkinson, celebrated recent sporting achievements, and recognised the recipients of the 2026 Deadly Student Awards.

These awards celebrate students who have been recognised by their peers for consistently demonstrating the GSSC values, showing a strong commitment to their learning, and making positive contributions to their classrooms and school community. Congratulations to our six deserving recipients.

The assembly also featured outstanding performances from our choir and powerful traditional dances performed by our First Nations students, showcasing culture, pride and connection.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make this year's NAIDOC Week such a memorable celebration. Through opportunities to learn, connect and celebrate together, we continue to recognise and honour the rich cultures, histories and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, not only during NAIDOC Week, but throughout the year.
