Year 1/2 Learning Highlights – Lunar New Year & Humanities
Lunar New Year 🐎
To celebrate Lunar New Year, the Year 1/2 students listened to the traditional story The Great Race. Through this engaging tale, they learned how the 12 animals of the zodiac were chosen and how the lunar calendar came to be.
To extend their learning, students created beautiful sun catcher crafts inspired by the Year of the Horse. Their colourful artworks are now glistening in our classroom windows and look absolutely amazing! Students also learned about special Lunar New Year traditions, including the giving of red packets as a symbol of good luck and prosperity.
Humanities – Ancient Egypt 🏺
Our Year 1/2 students have begun an exciting new unit exploring Ancient Egypt. They are learning about where Ancient Egypt is located on the world map and discovering why the Nile River was so important to everyday life.
Students are also learning about what people in Ancient Egypt looked like and how they dressed. They have been exploring how Egyptians often wore distinctive clothing and eye makeup, including eyeliner, which was part of both style and cultural tradition. We are looking forward to uncovering more fascinating facts about this ancient civilisation in the weeks ahead!
Premiers' Reading Challenge
The Premiers' Reading Challenge has now begun, inviting students to explore the world of stories and build a lifelong love of reading. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to discover new books, authors and ideas while developing important reading skills. We encourage families to support their child by reading regularly and logging completed books online. Enjoy sharing reading time together at home — whether it’s a picture book, chapter book or independent reading, every book truly makes a difference!
