A Snapshot into Reading

Learning Experience Overview

To identify the themes and make connections while exploring our Term Four Big Idea, linking our wonderings to Question One.

What students were asked to do

Using this strategy:

Students participated in a class discussion about our Big Idea and pondered what we could be exploring this term.

As the teacher read the Big Idea statement:

Students were asked to question what themes could be related to this idea that we will explore throughout the term.

In 2G, the themes students stated were:

In 2S the themes student stated were:

As you can see, it was interesting to observe how both classes interpreted the Big Idea and its themes slightly differently.

In the following lesson, we explored and unpacked the meaning of Question One as a class:

As a class, students were asked to explain “what’s an idea you have about these themes?”

In 2G, students stated:

  • to learn about our family's past
  • Australia’s to understand our place in time

In 2S, students stated:

  • celebrations and travel
  • transitions of cultures
  • togetherness and communities

We are excited to see how these themes and student meanings continue to develop throughout the term.

What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience

Continue sharing and exploring stories about your family's history and culture to support your child in making their Culture Jar for this week’s homework.

When reading stories with tales of migration or cultural differences, discuss how these experiences add to and shape the diverse fabric of Australia.
