Year 1 Bulletin

Learning Intention:
To identify the problem and to give advice to the character.
Learning Experience Overview:
Students explored how to identify problems in a story and think of helpful advice to give the characters.
Students listened to a conversation between Luca and Molly, who noticed rubbish, running taps and damaged plants in their school playground. They were encouraged to look closely at the accompanying illustration while listening to the conversation, using clues from both the image and the characters' words to understand what was happening.
We used our ‘Give Advice to the Character’ anchor chart to support students in identifying the problem, considering who was affected and suggesting helpful solutions.
What we asked the children to do:
Using the passage, illustration and anchor chart, students were encouraged to answer three questions:
What is the problem? Identify what is happening using clues from the picture and conversation.
Who is affected by the problem? Think about how the problem impacts the characters, other people, animals, plants and the environment.
What advice would you give Luca and Molly? Suggest kind, helpful and realistic solutions to the problem.
Students were encouraged to explain their thinking using evidence from both the passage and illustration.
How you can continue the learning at home:
- Read together: Encourage your child to identify problems characters face in books.
- Identify the problem: Ask, “What is happening?” and “What is the problem?”
- Think about who is affected: Ask, “Who is affected by the problem?” and “How might they feel?”
- Give advice: Ask, “What advice would you give the character?” and “How could they solve the problem?”
- Use picture clues: Encourage your child to look closely at illustrations to support their understanding.
- Make real-life connections: Discuss everyday problems and encourage your child to suggest kind, helpful and realistic solutions.
Thank you for all your support!
