Students share talents through mentoring others

Providing opportunities for our young men to support one another and share their gifts and talents has been wonderfully demonstrated through our student mentoring sessions. Each Wednesday our Year 7–10 students have the opportunity to receive assistance with their schoolwork, whether that be completing homework, preparing for upcoming assessments, or working through areas of difficulty.

A special thank you to the young men who have shown the confidence and initiative to seek support. In doing so, they are demonstrating a genuine desire to improve and make the most of the opportunities available to them. I would also like to thank our Year 11 and 12 students who are generously giving up their time to support our younger boys. The positive example they are setting as role models is greatly appreciated. In my eyes, this is what it means to be a gentlemen — using your gifts in the service of others.

“A gentleman is not measured by his strength, status, or success, but by the respect he shows, the responsibility he accepts, and the kindness he gives when no one is watching.”

In the Service of others

A shout out to Year 9 Student Ryder Vagg who is devoting some significant time and effort towards a very worthy cause. Please see below details on how we can support Ryder. Great work Ryder!!!

Ryder has challenged himself to getting into the water every day for 365 days to raise money for Camp Quality, which supports children and families affected by cancer. He has an official authority to fundraise and has continued the challenge every day through winter while balancing school, soccer and work.

He originally set himself a goal of raising $1,000 and achieved that within his first month. He then increased the goal to $2,000 and reached that only two weeks later. He is now working towards raising $3,000.

Our EREA Network

This week, I had the privilege of being invited to take part in the selection panel for the appointment of Deputy Principal at St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe in Brisbane. One of the things I continue to be amazed by is the strong sense of connection across our EREA schools. Wherever we go within the network, there is a genuine sense of familiarity, shared purpose, and belonging.

As we listened to and unpacked the needs of the school, and heard how potential leaders would respond to those needs, it was clear that our strength lies in this deep connection to something bigger than ourselves. When we feel we are part of something meaningful, and when we share a strong bond with those around us, we are far more likely to achieve positive and successful outcomes.

Walking through the grounds of Nudgee College and being greeted by students felt no different to being welcomed each morning here at Austins Ferry. The spirit of our schools is remarkably similar — although I must admit, 19 degrees during winter was certainly a welcome change!

I would like to sincerely thank the EREA network for the invitation and opportunity. I can honestly say that the experience has strengthened my pride in being connected to our St Virgil’s College family.
