Upper Secondary (Years 9-10)
This week 9/10 students went to Phillip Island Camp for 3 days. Students participated in a variety of activities such as going to the Penguin Parade, flying fox, giant swing, team building activities, archery picnic at the beach and more. Our students that went all had a fantastic time!
Senior Secondary (VPC/ASDAN)
It has been an exciting start to Term 3 with students experiencing a variety of work and course placement opportunities, as well as beginning our new learning projects.
Our Numeracy this term is looking at 2D shapes in the community, units of measurement and time.
In Literacy, students have been busily researching camp locations and local activities for the Year 11/12 camp next term.
Students are preparing for their post-school life during WRS by updating or writing resumes, cover letters and practicing job interviews. We are having several workshops by staff at Brimbank Council to help students develop their job application skills over the coming term.
The work experience and VET/SBAT placements at various locations around Melbourne provides students with opportunities to experience different workplaces, including warehousing, hairdressing and supply chain logistics.
I highlight of this term has been our weekly visits to RMIT to broadcast live from SYN radio. Students prepare a script, choose music and experience work as a broadcaster. It has been great seeing the teamwork and conversations flow in the recording studio!
We had a thought-provoking talk by Aidan from the Pat Cronin Foundation in week 2 about the lifelong consequences of thoughtless acts of violence – students were obviously moved by the story and stayed behind to speak to Aiden afterwards about different ways to resolve conflict.
The year 11/12 students have been busy, both in and out of the classroom. In the classroom we have been learning about Our Bodies, How to Handle Stress, Independent Living Skills in the kitchen and reading Informaiton and Problem Solving. Our Numeracy is focused on how to use our money. Understanding whether we can afford an item, have something cheaper or save up and will there be any change? Also, 'making sure we get the receipt' is a must, if we want to take something back!
We use these skills when we go out to Work Experience, Travel Training and in the Community, shoppiing.
On Friday some of us dressed in our finest and returned to school at 6:00pm for the Formal. Harry Potter was the theme and the school hall was decorated with all the things you'd find at Hogwarts; Hagrid, Harry, Hermoine, Dumbledore to name a few.
Hogsmeade's sweet shop, Honeydukes, catered to all the sweet tooths amongst us with Fizzing Whizzbees and Bertie Bots. The DJ was our own Mattew Navarrate who catered to everyone's music tastes and did an amazing job with his own equipment and style.
A great way to end the week!
