Sustainable House Day

Sustainable House Day invites us to consider the practical solutions that make homes more efficient, affordable, and climate-ready. Students had the opportunity to participate in a Minecraft challenge to design their own sustainable house. Considering space, design, eco-friendly and sustainable choices, there was a range of inspirational homes. Congratulations Hannah J (Yr 7), Shruti K (Yr 7) and Marielle S (Yr 7), for their winning entries and thank you to everyone who was involved.

National Water Week

National Water Week makes a splash right across Australia in the third week of October each year. It inspires individuals, communities and organisations to work together to build community awareness and understanding around water related topics and challenges. National Water Week provides an opportunity to remind ourselves and teach others that access to clean water is hugely important to every aspect of our lives, and we must do our utmost to protect our water environments and resources, use water wisely and respect its importance in our societies. The Climate Canons observed this with an event on Tuesday 27 October where students participated in a number of water saving activities. Thank you to everyone who came along to learn more ways to be water wise.

Buy Nothing New October

October is Buy Nothing New Month, a movement asking you to pause non-essential purchases for 30 days. All this term, the Climate Canons have requested families to check at home for any mobile phones that are not in use anymore (including chords) so they can be properly recycled. Did you know there are key recyclable materials in your phones including precious and heavy metals like gold, silver, copper, palladium, and platinum. Your lithium-ion and nickel-based batteries are crushed and shredded to recover lithium, cobalt, nickel and cadmium to manufacture new batteries. And the aluminium and steel from the phone body and internal screws are melted down into new metal products or stainless steel. You have until Friday 6 November to drop off your phones to the box in Student Services.

The Climate Canons are also hosting a Book Swap in Week 4.5. This enables students to declutter and repurpose old books and replace them with some new readings for the summer holidays. If you have any books to share, please drop them off to Student Services, use the slip to write your name in the book so you can be contacted to come and be part of the swap. Books can be dropped off until 6 November.
