Foundation – Term 3 Overview
Welcome to Term 3! This term our Discovery unit is Healthy Heroes, where students will explore how to make healthy choices, understand their feelings, build positive relationships and learn how to be kind and responsible members of our community.
Mathematics
This term, students will continue developing their mathematical understanding through hands-on learning experiences.
Students will explore addition and subtraction using part-part-whole relationships, develop confidence with numbers to 10 and investigate repeating patterns through movement, music and play. Our focus shifts to measurement as students compare length, mass, capacity and duration through real-life investigations connected to healthy habits. Students will develop their understanding of location and direction by describing pathways and positions using everyday language such as turn left, go straight and next to. These skills will also support our swimming program. Students will consolidate their learning through revision activities, mathematical games and data collection.
Literacy
Students will continue building strong foundations in literacy through our daily phonics to develop and stengthen reading, spelling and writing skills.
Throughout the term we will focus on:
- strengthening phonics knowledge and decoding skills
- building confidence when reading familiar and new texts
- writing recounts and narratives
- developing oral language through discussions, presentations and storytelling
- using connectives such as because and but to explain ideas and opinions.
Discovery – Healthy Heroes
Our inquiry learning will follow four key phases throughout the term:
- Healthy Habits: Learning how our bodies grow and the importance of healthy food, movement, sleep and hygiene.
- Feelings and Safety: Recognising emotions, understanding body safety and learning how to ask for help when needed.
- Relationships: Exploring kindness, inclusion, friendships and celebrating how we are all unique.
- Reflection and Action: Applying our learning by making positive choices and reflecting on how we can be healthy, kind and responsible.
Students will participate in a range of engaging activities including measuring their growth, creating healthy journals, role-playing safe situations, interviewing classmates, collecting data, writing stories and celebrating acts of kindness.
