 EAL/D

Welcome to Term 2!

A powerful EAL/D strategy in the classroom is the use of Margin questions. Margin questions are questions or comments that students write in the spaces around a text while reading, capturing their thinking, wonderings, and interpretations in real time.

In Year 6, students have used margin questions as a purposeful strategy to deepen their understanding of texts and to think critically about the authority of both the author and illustrator. Students use the margin questions and sentence stems to organise their thoughts and ideas, focusing on using appropriate language choices. This practice encourages students to go beyond surface comprehension and consider how well thought out responses can be orally composed followed by writing. Through discussion and guided practice, students are developing their ability to analyse how texts are constructed and to articulate informed responses that demonstrate higher-order thinking.
