AusCycling Victorian Track State Championships
Congratulations to Year 12 Reuben Smith, who won individual Silver and Bronze medals at the AusCycling Victorian Track State Championships on Saturday 1st March.
The 18-year old won Silver in the “Kilo” (1km Time Trial), and Bronze in the Sprint, at the DISC Velodrome in Melbourne, now competing up in the Elite Men division.
The Wangaratta West Primary School product has now been named to the Victorian State Team (one of 10 boys) to race at the AusCycling Track National Championships, at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane QLD, between March 25-30.
Smith also raced in February at the Oceania Track Championships in Brisbane, where he got a Personal Best in the 1km Time Trial.
Our 2024 Sportsperson Of The Year, Reuben was last year the 2nd fastest Under 19 Track Cyclist in Australia, winning 2 Silver Medals (Sprint and 1km Time Trial) at the National Championships. The only boy faster, was the Junior World Champion, who is also the Junior Australian Record Holder. He also won medals at the Oceania Track Cycling Championships in New Zealand.
In 2023, he won the prestigious 86th Melbourne Cup On Wheels race, which counts legends Sid Patterson and Dean Woods as past winners. He became the 1st Wangaratta boy to win The Cup in 33 years, since the late Woods, probably Wangaratta’s greatest ever Sporting legend, who won an Olympics Gold Medal at Los Angeles in 1984, as an 18-year-old prodigy in the Team Pursuit.
Best of luck at the Nationals Reuben. We'll all be cheering you on.
