What’s Happening in Year 5 in October
Hi Year 5 community, welcome back to school. We hope everyone is ready to launch into a busy term 4. Make sure to enjoy the time with your classmates and cherish all the adventures this term.
This term, we are continuing to explore the Respectful Relationships curriculum. In the month of October, students will participate in Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships lessons. The focus will be on Topics 4 and 5.
Topic 4: Problem-solving helps students to learn a range of problem-solving techniques to manage personal, social and ethical dilemmas.
Topic 5: Stress Management supports students to consider the causes of stress and develop a range of self-regulation and coping strategies they can draw on to manage stressful situations.
All year 5’s will be continuing their leadership workshops continuing with the Grade 3’s this week. The leadership workshops include Art, Sport, Digital technology, sustainability and our Upstanders Program.
Wellbeing
- Explore the links between their emotions and their behaviour
- Reflect on how personal strengths have assisted in achieving success at home, at school or in the community
Literacy
- Understand how noun groups/phrases and adjective groups/phrases can be expanded in a variety of ways to provide a fuller description of the person, place, thing or idea
- Understand the use of vocabulary to express greater precision of meaning, and know that words can have different meanings in different contexts
- Plan, draft and publish imaginative, informative and persuasive print and multimodal texts, choosing text structures, language features, images and sound appropriate to purpose and audience
- Reread and edit own and others’ work using agreed criteria for text structures and language features
- Develop a handwriting style that is becoming legible, fluent and automatic
- Understand how to use banks of known words, syllabification, spelling patterns, word origins, base words, prefixes and suffixes, to spell new words, including some uncommon plurals
- Read and complete associated activities with our class novel The Grandest Bookshop.
Maths
Students are completing Decimals. This will include:
- making models of decimals including tenths, hundredths and thousandths by subdividing materials or grids, and explaining the multiplicative relationship between consecutive places; for example, explaining that thousandths are 10 times smaller than hundredths, or writing numbers into a place value chart to compare and order them
- renaming decimals to assist with mental computation; for example, when asked to solve 0.6 ÷ 10 they rename 6 tenths as 60 hundredths and say, ‘If I divide 60 hundredths by 10, I get 6 hundredths’ and write 0.6 ÷ 10 = 0.06
- using a number line or number track to represent and locate decimals with varying numbers of decimal places and numbers greater than one and justifying the placement; for example, 2.335 is halfway between 2.33 and 2.34, that is, 2.33 < 2.335 < 2.34, and 5.283 is between 5.28 and 5.29 but closer to 5.28
- interpreting and comparing the digits in decimal measures, for example, the length or mass of animals or plants, such as a baby echidna weighing 1.78 kilograms and a platypus weighing 1.708 kilograms
- interpreting plans or diagrams showing length measures as decimals, placing the numbers into a decimal place value chart to connect the digits to their value

Year 6
What’s Happening in Year 6 in October
Welcome to Term 4! It is hard to believe we have reached the final term of Grade 6 and, for our students, the final term of primary school. We have an exciting and busy term ahead, with plenty of learning, special events and opportunities to celebrate our Grade 6 students and their final months at Beaumaris Primary School.
Literacy
We finished Term 3 by wrapping up our learning around Shaun Tan’s The Lost Thing. Students wrote a book and film comparison before developing their PowerPoint skills by creating presentations to communicate their ideas using images and audio.
This term, we are excited to begin our new novel study, Holes by Louis Sachar. The novel follows Stanley Yelnats, a boy who is wrongly sent to Camp Green Lake, where he and the other boys are forced to dig a hole every day. As Stanley begins to question why they are really digging, the story weaves together mystery, friendship, family history and fate. Students will explore the novel’s characters, themes and clever connections as the story unfolds.
Maths
We had so much fun finishing Term 3 with our Mini Golf unit, where students explored angles by designing their own nine-hole courses. Our Mini Golf incursion was a highlight, particularly when our Prep buddies joined us for a putt and our Grade 6 students had the opportunity to share and explain their mathematical knowledge.
Over the coming weeks, our Maths learning will focus on Data Investigations. Students will develop questions, collect and represent data, analyse their findings and use evidence to draw conclusions. They will explore different ways of displaying and interpreting data and consider how data can be used to communicate information effectively.
Science
Our excursion to the Royal Botanic Gardens was a wonderful way to finish our learning about biomimicry. Students explored how ideas and solutions can be inspired by the natural world before putting their learning into action by designing their own biomimicry-inspired inventions.
Economics
We are looking forward to beginning our new Economics knowledge unit, where students will investigate the processes involved in creating and running a business. They will explore how businesses develop ideas, identify their target market, consider costs and pricing, advertise their products and make decisions to help their business succeed.
Our learning will culminate in the much-anticipated Grade 6 Market Stall, where students will have the opportunity to put their new knowledge into practice by developing and running their own business.
Wellbeing
We finished Term 3 with a valuable session from REACH, providing students with opportunities to reflect, connect and build confidence. This term, we will continue our learning through the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) program, supporting students to build positive relationships, resilience and important social and emotional skills as they approach the end of their primary school journey.
