What’s Happening in Year 3 in October

Welcome back to Term 4, Year 3 families! We hope everyone enjoyed a well-deserved break and is ready for an exciting and action-packed final term of the year. We have lots to look forward to, including our Year 3 Camp, where students will have the opportunity to challenge themselves, build independence and create wonderful memories with their classmates. This term, students will also enjoy two exciting incursions: Find Ya Feet, which will focus on developing important wellbeing and life skills, and Music of the World, where students will explore music, instruments and cultures from around the world. In Literacy, we will begin a new novel study, The One and Only Ivan, providing opportunities for students to develop their reading comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills while exploring themes of friendship, kindness, courage and hope. It promises to be a wonderful final term filled with learning, new experiences and plenty of opportunities for students to celebrate their growth throughout the year. We look forward to sharing this special term with our Year 3 students and families!

Wellbeing

  • This month, we will continue to implement the Grow Your Mind podcast to learn about resilience, respect, responsibility, and relationships. It focuses on making the parts of your brain responsible for decision making and self-regulation relatable by connecting them to different animals. Over the next month, students will explore the role of the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, reticular activating system, and amygdala and learn how to be of benefit to others.
  • This term, we are continuing to explore the Respectful Relationships curriculum. In the month of October, students will participate in Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships lessons. The focus will be on Topic 3.
  • Topic 3: Positive Coping supports students to develop language around coping, reflect on their coping strategies and build a range of positive coping strategies.

The Year 4 Teachers are looking forward to all the exciting events planned throughout the upcoming term. These include a visit to the Zoo, the Bike Education Program, as well as the annual Beaumaris Primary School Carols Afternoon. Please make sure you check the Compass App regularly to stay up to date with all the information regarding these events, as they are posted.

Wellbeing

Students will continue to participate the Respectful Relationships Program. This coming term will contain a particular focus on managing peer pressure.

Literacy

This term, the Year 4 students will be completing another novel study. ‘Nim’s Island’ was written by Australian author, Wendy Orr and we are sure it will become a favourite literature memory with our students. Our new spelling program, Word Origins will continue to be implemented throughout the second semester. Students will also write a narrative this coming term

Knowledge Unit

Our knowledge unit in Term 4 is Geography. Some of the questions we will be investigating include;

  • How are the continents of Australia, Africa and South America similar and different?
  • What are the geographical features and cultural practices that make these places unique?
  • How do people and animals in different climate zones adapt to their environments?

Homework

The Year 4 students are expected to read every night and record their progress in their personal diaries. It is the responsibility of the student to bring their diary to school every day and take it home each night to log their reading. Classroom teachers will be checking and signing these diaries regularly to monitor student reading habits. The student diary will also be used to highlight important dates and reminders.
