Mathslympics & Family Maths Night – What a Day!

Wednesday was certainly a huge day at Woodend Primary School, with our Mathslympics and Family Maths Night bringing Maths to life right across the school!

We kicked things off in the morning with our Mathslympics Opening Ceremony, where our four Houses came together ready for a day of competition, teamwork and, most importantly, plenty of Maths. After taking the Mathslympics Oath and lighting our Mathslympics cauldron, students headed off in their House teams to take part in a range of Maths-based challenges and activities across the school.

Throughout the day, it was fantastic to see students from Foundation through to Year 6 working together, problem solving, estimating, calculating, discussing strategies and representing their Houses with plenty of enthusiasm. The smiles, excitement and conversations from our students were a real highlight and made for a fantastic atmosphere around the school.

The Maths celebrations then continued into the evening with Family Maths Night. It was wonderful to see so many families come through our gates and spend the evening exploring classrooms, playing Maths games, tackling challenges and solving problems together. Having our students proudly showing their families what they know and how they think mathematically was one of the real highlights of the night.

Events like these are a great reminder that Maths is so much more than completing calculations on a page. It is about thinking, problem solving, reasoning, making connections and, importantly, having fun with Maths together.

A huge thank you to our incredible staff for the enormous amount of work that went into making both events possible. From preparing activities and resources to running stations throughout the day and then returning for Family Maths Night, the enthusiasm and support of our staff made the day what it was.

Thank you also to our students for embracing the day so enthusiastically and to our families for coming along in such fantastic numbers and getting involved. The feedback we have already received from our school community has been incredibly positive.

If you missed Family Maths Night, or didn’t get a chance to grab all of the resources on the night, don’t worry! Keep an eye out on Compass early next week, where we will be sending out the Family Maths Night resources so that families can continue to play, explore and enjoy Maths together at home.

The Mathslympics and Family Maths Night continue to be a real highlight on our school calendar, and Wednesday was another wonderful example of what makes the Woodend Primary School community so special.
