Attendance Matters

As we begin Term 2, it’s the perfect time for a fresh start. Establishing strong routines around attendance and punctuality helps set every student up for success. Being at school every day—and arriving on time—ensures students are settled, connected, and ready to learn from the very first moment of the day.

Every Day Counts: Why Attendance Matters

It’s more than just “one lesson”

When a student misses a day of school, they miss far more than a single lesson. Learning

is carefully sequenced, with each day building on the one before. Key concepts are introduced, explained, practised, and reinforced over time. Missing even one step in that process can make it harder for students to fully understand new material, often requiring extra effort to catch up.

Gaps can grow quickly

Consistent attendance is especially important in foundational areas like reading, writing, and mathematics. These skills develop progressively, and regular practice is essential. When students are frequently absent, gaps in understanding can form—and over time, those gaps can widen, affecting confidence and achievement across multiple subjects.

Attendance supports confidence and connection

Being at school every day also helps students feel connected. Regular attendance strengthens friendships, builds a sense of belonging, and allows students to participate fully in classroom activities. When students are present, they are more likely to feel confident, included, and ready to contribute.

Small absences add up

It’s easy to underestimate the impact of a few missed days here and there. However, the effect over time can be significant:

  • Missing just one day per fortnight adds up to nearly four weeks of lost learning across the school year.

A shared commitment

Supporting strong attendance is a partnership between families and schools. Establishing consistent routines, prioritising school days, and communicating openly when challenges arise can make a meaningful difference. Every day a student is at school is an opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
