Kitchen Classroom

The Kitchen Classroom program has officially recommenced, bringing with it the wonderful sights, smells and learning opportunities that make this such a valued part of our curriculum. From Foundation to Year 6, students are developing essential life skills through cooking - learning everything from kitchen safety and hygiene, to food preparation, measuring, following recipes and working collaboratively as part of a team.

The Kitchen Classroom also provides a real life opportunity for students to apply their learning across curriculum areas, particularly Mathematics and English, as they measure, estimate, sequence, problem-solve, read, write and communicate with purpose.

A strong focus of the program is using fresh produce grown in our school garden, while also celebrating the rich cultural diversity within our school community through food and cuisine from around the world.

We are also progressively undertaking a refresh of our kitchen space - upgrading equipment and introducing new tools and resources with the generous support of our PTFA. We are incredibly grateful for their ongoing partnership in helping us enhance this important learning environment.

While introducing new experiences, we are retaining some much-loved favourites on the menu, including our traditional ANZAC biscuits, prepared to commemorate ANZAC Day.

Fortnightly lessons this term are built around a Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner theme, with increasing opportunities for student agency, independence and challenge - particularly for our senior students in Years 5 and 6.

Our Breakfast focus has already seen students exploring Japanese cuisine through the making of Okonomiyaki (savoury pancakes), while our Foundation to Year 2 students have been busy creating delicious savoury egg bites.

It has been a fantastic start to the year in Kitchen Classroom, and we look forward to sharing more culinary adventures and recipes with our community throughout the term!
