Playground Safety
As some of you may or may not be aware, we have been trialling an alternating schedule for ball sports out in the yard for the last couple of weeks. While I was meaning to send out some correspondence explaining this, I did not in fact get this organised before I went on the Northern Territory trip with the Year 6 students, so I do apologise for the delay in correspondence.
With student safety being paramount when playing outside, we are always looking for ways in which the students can maximise their enjoyment outside in the safest way possible. Our nurse has been beginning to find an increased number of injuries, such as head knocks, due to students clashing into each other as multiple games are being played in the same spaces.
We decided to trial an alternating ball sport for each day to see if this would have a positive impact. The thinking was that with football and soccer games happening simultaneously, the chance of incidental clashes may be higher due to one ball being in the air and another being on the ground.
At the conclusion of this week, our students will have an opportunity to share with their Junior School Councillors whether or not they liked this adjustment and if they have any other suggestions to help make our yard a safe and fun space to be in during recess and lunch.
If your child has expressed disappointment by these adjustments, we ask that you open up a discussion about the importance of safety and encourage them to speak to their Junior School Council members about ideas they have on how we can continue to make the yard a safe and fun place to be.
