Term 3 was a busy and active term in Physical Education, with students across the school developing a range of movement skills through volleyball, gymnastics, teeball and golf. The focus was on building students’ fundamental movement skills, coordination, confidence and understanding of different sports. Students had opportunities to practise new skills, apply them in games and challenges, and develop their ability to work with others and play with increasing independence.
Foundation students were introduced to volleyball through a range of throwing and catching activities. Using a large ball and a net, students developed their ability to throw and catch while tracking the ball with their eyes. They also practised catching the ball using their hands and developing greater control and coordination. In gymnastics, students explored different ways of moving and controlling their bodies. They worked on developing balance, strength and flexibility through activities such as holding static positions, using their bodies to create the letters of the alphabet and moving like different animals.
Year 1/2 students developed their throwing and catching skills through Newcombe, a modified version of volleyball. Students progressed from throwing and catching with a partner to completing individual and partner challenges, including Keepy-Uppy – think Bluey! Students also developed the skills needed to play eeball, including throwing, catching and the two-hand side-arm strike. They learned the rules of a base-running game before putting their skills into practice during a game, with students working to score a home run.
Students in Years 3–6 developed their volleyball skills through Volleystars, a modified version of Volleyball played in the Inter-School Sport competition. Students practised the key skills of serving, digging and setting, while also developing their understanding of the rules and strategies of the game. A key focus was developing students’ ability to play against another team and officiate their own games with increasing independence. Students also completed a golf unit. They progressed from putting to chipping and eventually to taking a full golf swing. Throughout the unit, students focused on developing the correct grip and swing technique, as well as improving their coordination and ability to make consistent contact with the ball.
In Term 4, the focus for all students will be athletics. Each week, students will focus on a different athletics event and have the opportunity to have their performance timed or measured. This will allow students to develop their skills while also tracking their individual progress.
Foundation to Year 2 students will be introduced to the different athletics events using modified equipment and activities that are appropriate for their age and stage of development.
For students in Years 3–6, their results will provide valuable information to support the selection of the Athletics team for next year. The results will also give students and teachers an overview of individual strengths in areas such as speed, strength and agility.
We look forward to seeing students challenge themselves, develop their athletic skills and celebrate their individual progress throughout Term 4!
