Equestrian Squad Pilot Program Kicks Off at Rochester

On Wednesday 20 August the MAG Equestrian Squad held their first ever Squad training program. As part of this pilot program students from Year 4 through to Year 8 came together at Rochester Pony Club for a mix of off horse theory lessons and ridden lessons.

Miss Briggs took the ridden group through a range of flatwork warming up exercises involving flexing and counter flexing the horses’ neck, a range of trot and walk pole activities, and some jumping exercises focusing on the quality turns and straightness into the fences. Miss Sweetnam took the students through plaiting practice for a show ring presentation. The group also worked hard to set up and pack up the grounds after the last lesson. Thank you to the parents who also supported the students and horses on the day. The students showed great enthusiasm and horsemanship, and we look forward to continuing to grow the program into the future.

The next squad date is Wednesday 3 September.

Victorian Netball Championships Bendigo – 19th August

Congratulations to the 54 students and six teams from Year 5 to Year 10 who attended the Victorian Netball Championships on Tuesday, 19th August.

We were very lucky to have a perfect day, and all the students enjoyed themselves. Although no teams made it through to the finals at the State Netball Centre, there were some very pleasing results.

The Grade 5/6 Girls team won 3 and lost 2, while the 5/6 Mixed team finished with just one win but really enjoyed seeing great improvement across the day. The Year 9/10 team fought hard, with several matches that were very closely contested. Our Year 7/8 teams had the most success: Chanter lost only one of their six matches, Martin won 2 matches and drew 1, while Perricoota must be congratulated for their persistence and resilience.

A huge thank you to our parent and teacher coaches—Jacquie James, Kiralee Pascoe, Gemma James, Kath McIntosh and Suzie Devlin—for their expertise and positive approach to the day. Thank you also to our umpires—Renea Harris, Sharon Moon, Delaney Laffy, Georgia McGowan, Megon Fernwick and Olive Morton.

MAG on the Slopes

Year 7 student Maelle Lyle proudly represented Moama Anglican Grammar at the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships at Mt Buller last week. Competing in Division 3 (Years 7 & 8) against 220 competitors, Maelle achieved 63rd place in the Ski Giant Slalom and 51st place in the Ski Cross. A fantastic effort on the slopes, showcasing skill and determination in a very competitive field. Congratulations, Maelle, on an outstanding effort!

Year 7/8 Girls Netball – NSW Schools Cup Phase 2

Our Year 7 and 8 Girls Netball team proudly represented the school on Monday 25th August at Phase 2 of the NSW Schools Cup. The team showed outstanding resilience after losing three of their original players—Ruby Whitelegg, Alice Peat and Isobel Jennings—to injury and illness in the days leading up to the tournament.

On the day, the girls finished runners-up after three preliminary rounds, a semi-final and an overtime grand final, narrowly missing a spot at the State Final. The schools the team competed against included Lake Cargelligo Central School, Hennessy, Kildare Catholic College and Xavier High School. After two early wins, they suffered a narrow one-goal loss to Kildare. This led to a crossover semi-final against the undefeated Xavier. In an extremely closely contested game, with sharp shooting and full-court defence, the girls upset Xavier with a two-goal win.

Our girls then had the opportunity to redeem their earlier loss against Kildare. At the end of full time, the scores were level, sending the game into overtime (five minutes each way). Unfortunately, the girls could not quite match Kildare to the very end, with the final score being 26–20.

The following girls represented the school at Phase 2: Sadie Laffy, Quinn Downward, Heidi McIntosh, Sienna Weeks, Teagan Moon, Lulu Williams, Rose Williams, Isobel Jennings, and Lucy Ridge.

Many thanks to Renea Harris, who has been our umpire throughout the numerous tournaments and who also assisted us in finding extra umpires when needed.

Thank you to our cool and calm scorer, Lyla Harris, who coped beautifully with the stress of the close matches. And thank you to Gemma Joyce for all the behind-the-scenes work that ensured we had everything we needed for tournament days.
