Primary School

Each year, Book Week provides many great opportunities to celebrate Australian literature and this year’s theme, ‘Book an Adventure’, was no exception. Students joined in the celebrations by attending the many activities scheduled throughout the week. The support from our families at the annual Book Week Character Parade was wonderful for our students, who came dressed as their favourite book characters. I would like to thank Ms Height and Ms O’Neill for their organisation and support throughout the week.
Jump Rope for Heart - Year 5 Update
Our Year 5 students have been enthusiastically continuing their skipping practice as part of the Jump Rope for Heart program. Alongside improving their fitness, coordination, and perseverance, they have also been working hard to raise funds for the Heart Foundation. Students have been challenging themselves with new skipping tricks and even developing their own skipping routine.
It has been wonderful to see their teamwork, encouragement of one another, and growing awareness of how their efforts contribute to a worthy cause. So far, the Year 5 cohort has raised over $800, with a goal of $1,500. If you are a Year 5 family, we encourage you to register your child online. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference and brings us closer to our target!
Cyber Safety Incursion
On Monday 18 August, students in Year 5 and Year 6 gathered in the Multipurpose Hall for a talk about cyber safety and how to follow the rules online. Leading Senior Constable Shane Roberts from the Proactive Policing Unit answered many questions and guided the students through important online safety precautions. Students learned about being A.W.A.R.E before sending or posting a photo or video online:
A - Appropriate; is it suitable for you and your friends?
W - Who; who could see it?
A - Accurate; is it correct and true?
R - Respectful; is it kind and considerate?
E - Environment; what’s in the background of the photo or video?
We would like to thank Shane for his time and for sharing these important lessons with our students.
Year 6 Gunbower Excursion
On Friday 22 August, students in Year 6 visited Gunbower Estate to learn more about the history of the homestead and property. Students were tasked with writing down interesting facts as they toured the estate with property manager Mr Dean Walton. Next Term, the students will return to Gunbower Estate with their Year 1 buddies and take on the role of tour guides themselves.
“The house was made up of many different types of bricks and featured interesting architecture. The furniture was distinguished and far from modest. The chandeliers hung high with pride in the living rooms, where wood-fired smoke covered the walls. The stained glass made the hallway vibrant and noticeable, while old posters caught the eye of the students. Dusty tables and old games were all that was left of the torn-up men’s room.
Once we left the house, it felt like we had gone back in time. The cellar was dark, with a dim light keeping us from the pitch black. The old lemon tree that had bright, fresh lemons that dangled over the sunburnt grass. The river's flow was smooth and looked refreshing. The beautiful green paddocks, dotted with yellow flowers that glowed in the sunlight, made it hard to look away.”

Spotlight on Learning
This term in Year 2, students have been learning about how things have changed over time, exploring the ideas of ‘then’ and ‘now’. Students have been comparing and contrasting the past with the present, using Venn Diagrams to organise and show their thinking. Similarly, students in Year 12 have been using Venn Diagrams with Mrs Kemp to organise their thinking in Mathematics, so what a great opportunity for the Year 12 students to visit the students in their classroom on Wednesday. The Year 2 students enjoyed the opportunity to share their learning and explain how they have been investigating changes over time.
We were fortunate to have four Year 12 students from Kathleen Kemp’s Advanced Maths class join us. After our students shared their Venn diagrams and even completed some alongside the Year 12s, Michael was eager to show the younger students what they had recently been learning in class. Both groups listened intently as he explained and responded thoughtfully to his questions. The Year 2s absolutely loved it! It was a wonderful experience, and we appreciated the Year 12s taking time out of their study period to visit us.
Student Achievement
Year 4 student Addison Coburn has been named the Riverine Herald Junior Sportstar of the Month (July) for her incredible achievements in gymnastics. Addi took on the country’s best in Level 5 Tumbling at the Australian Gymnastics Championships, competing on a 25-metre sprung and padded track. With determination and skill, she executed eight demanding passes and powered her way into the top 12 in the nation, securing her best score in the following round. She narrowly missed the top six by just a tenth of a point, finishing an outstanding seventh overall. She is now in the running for the Sportstar of the Year, to be announced in February. Well done, Addi, we are so proud of you!
Tournament of Minds
Throughout this term, 14 enthusiastic students from Years 4 to Year 6 have been working with Miss Delmenico and Ms Height on the Tournament of Minds (TOM) Challenge. Two teams have been preparing for different challenges: one focused on Social Sciences and the other on Language Literature. The Social Sciences group has been working together to design and develop their own recreational centre for our town, while the Language Literature group has been exploring Shaun Tan’s book ‘Eric’ and creatively bringing it to life.
On Sunday 24 August, our TOM Primary teams came into school to organise and rehearse their performances. Students collaborated closely to finalise costumes, props, and scripts, listening to each other’s ideas, solving problems as a team, and showing impressive creativity and perseverance. The day was full of energy, teamwork, and excitement as everyone supported one another to get ready for their performance.
We are incredibly proud of the effort, cooperation and commitment these students have shown throughout the term. Good luck to Robert Francis, Isabelle Townrow, Eli O'Sullivan, Shriya Rayas, Elsie Stevens, Hudson Knight, Grace Pike, Isa Kenley, Rosie Grant, Rafael Hildebrand, James Cox, Autumn Corlett-Love, Lizette Heinrich and Hamish Moon as they travel to Wagga Wagga on Sunday 31 August to compete against other schools. We cannot wait to hear about their experiences and celebrate their achievements.
Early Stage 1 Assembly
Students in Kindergarten came together for a Stage Assembly and morning tea picnic to celebrate the superstars this week. Congratulations to Olivia McKay, Londyn Thorpe, Harriet Slattery, Scout Harrison and Hendrix Hegarty for receiving these awards. It was also a great opportunity for the Kindergarten students and teachers to thank the Year 6 helpers, Emma, Lily, Hannah and Lucy for their amazing support with making their 100 days of school such a fun and exciting day.
Stage 1 Assembly
Students in Year 2B presented a wonderful Stage 1 Assembly on Wednesday 27 August where they explained what they have been learning in Mathematics about arrays. The students described arrays as groups of objects set out in rows and columns, which makes it easier to see repeated addition and begin to understand multiplication. The students spoke with confidence as they shared clear examples, such as arranging counters, pictures or items from daily life, making their presentation both engaging and informative. The students in Year 2B presented their ‘Array City’ artworks and posters to the Stage, which demonstrated their creativity and understanding of this important mathematical concept. Stage 1 also congratulated and thanked Mrs Whipp for finalising her teaching practicum experience at MAG.
Congratulations to the students below who received their Stage 1 Super Star Award at the Assembly.

Stage 3 Assembly
“On Wednesday, Year 5 and Year 6 students gathered in the courtyard for a brief assembly to discuss upcoming events and celebrate awards. Everyone was pleasantly surprised that the gloomy weather cleared up for the occasion. Two hosts from 6B confidently led the assembly, ensuring it ran smoothly. Six students received awards, and twelve students shared exciting updates on a variety of topics, including MAG Equestrian Squad, Roller Derby, Tournament of the Minds, netball competitions, Year 5 Camp highlights, and more. It was a fantastic catch-up for everyone after several busy weeks. Awards were presented to students who demonstrated outstanding determination and attitude throughout the term. Congratulations to all!”
