Year 5/6 Newsletter – Term 2 week 4

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope the grade 5’s have recovered after our action-packed, and slightly damp, camp last week. Below is an overview of what students will be learning, as well as some important dates to keep in mind.

Literacy

Students began our class novel Dirrarn this week. In Writing, our text focus is factual recounts, with students completing vocabulary and grammar activities to deepen their understanding of language, author craft and meaning.

Literature Circles began this week also. Students have selected their novel and been placed into discussion groups. They complete tasks exploring different aspects of their text, including chapter summaries, figurative language and character analysis, before beginning collaborative discussions next week to share their thinking and insights.

Mathematics

Over the next four weeks in Mathematics, students will focus on developing their additive thinking skills through problem-solving involving integers, decimals, fractions and real-world financial contexts. They will practise using efficient mental and written strategies, estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of their answers, while explaining their mathematical thinking clearly.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry unit this term focuses on Natural Disasters. Students are investigating:

  • Different types of natural disasters
  • Their impacts on communities and environments
  • Ways these events can be managed and prepared for

A homework project has been distributed (also available on Google Classroom). Students are required to create:

  • A diorama representing their chosen natural disaster
  • An information poster explaining key facts

This is a fantastic opportunity for hands-on, creative learning.

  • Year 6 students will participate in both terms
