Year 3/4 - Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We’ve had a fantastic two weeks in Level 3/4!  The weather has mostly been beautiful, sunny Autumn days….. with a small taste of the winter that is coming!

We were very lucky to have a perfect warm night for our ENPS Family movie night under the stars last week. Thank you to the PFA for all their hard work organising this successful evening.

What's happened in Year 3/4 these last weeks?

English – The students continued their morphology studies, looking at the prefixes ‘de-’and ‘non’, and the suffixes ‘-ious’, ‘ous’.

We have finished reading our class novel, Uncle Xbox this week. The novel helped inspire our writing lessons this fortnight with students working hard on a factual recount on the British Colonisation and its impact on First Nations Australians.

Maths - We have continued our unit on addition and subtraction, exploring different strategies and practicing vertical addition and subtraction. This extended into learning and practising how to use renaming. We built on the concepts we learnt and extended these strategies using decimal numbers to hundredths.

Worded problems are  included in this unit as students continue to learn strategies to identify the important information in a worded problem, and how to create the correct equation to solve a worded problem successfully.

Inquiry- ‘What Makes a Design Go Bang!?’

It’s been fantastic to see how curious the students have been during our investigations of different inventors! We have been exploring what makes a great inventor and invention and connecting hard work, persistence, creativity and resilience as very important personality traits to be successful.

The students looked at Design and Technology vocabulary and created pamphlets with definitions and pictures.

At Home Project Information:

Next week the students will receive information about the‘at home project’ that all 3/4 students will be completing this term. They will be required to research an inventor and complete an oral presentation (keynote, poster, brochure etc), and present to the class in week 10.

Your child will be given a checklist and will need to complete all the tasks each week and bring it back to their teacher by the dates outlined. The checklist and recording sheet will be sent home next week. Students need to tell us who their inventor by Friday 22nd May, following this, the first component of research is due to be returned to us by Friday 29th May.

We are more than happy for homework to be completed BEFORE the assigned date.

Wellbeing - In Wellbeing we have looked at the 4 Friendship facts and the importance of trust and respect. We have identified Must-Have qualities in a healthy, feel good friendship and role played situations where we practice our reactions to friends when they have a different opinion to us. The Friendology lesson asked us: ‘Do we all like the same ice-cream flavours?. Differences are normal – how we react is what matters’.
