What Does My Future Hold?
Michael Halliday, Deputy Head of Secondary/Head of Senior Secondary
Does anyone else think that 2026 is racing by? Over the last couple of weeks students have been thinking about what the future holds for them in 2027 and beyond!
On Monday 20th July, we began with the 2027 Senior Secondary Information Night. This night was a significant opportunity to find out about the Senior Secondary program at Donvale covering Year 10 and VCE, and how best to navigate the various pathway and subject options. Students and parents then had the opportunity to speak with teachers and unpack exactly what is covered in each subject and where these subjects might lead to in the future. It was great to see more than 450 people at the event and the excitement (perhaps some apprehension!) around planning the senior years at Donvale and beyond.
A highlight of the Year 10 program is the broad range of subject offerings for students to choose from. As well as the more commonly known subjects, there are subjects such Social Beans, Sustainable Futures, Engineering and Justice & Citizenship, to name just a few!
As a follow up to the information night, Emily Gosbell, our Careers and Pathways Coordinator, has been running student sessions to give further information and answer any questions students have.
For current Year 10 students, they have been participating in an individual subject selection interview with a senior member of staff to discuss their plans for VCE and beyond. They look at future pathways into jobs, apprenticeships, TAFE and university courses to make sure their subject choices are the best fit for them. We find some students have a clear plan, while others are only just beginning the journey. These discussions have proven to be very fruitful and helpful.
More information for students and parents can be found on Schoolbox. Curriculum overviews, subject outlines, VET (Vocational Education & Training) options, opportunities for acceleration and the difference between a more traditional VCE and VCE Vocational Major, can all be found through Schoolbox links or by asking relevant staff.
It is a privilege to have this input into the student’s decision-making process. We look forward to students discovering God’s plan for their final years of school and the pathways He has set out for them beyond Donvale.
