ERIN MCGROARTY

Dear Class One Families,

It is my pleasure to be working with Class One Children while Erin has been called away. Thank you for supporting your children through this transition. From my perspective, the children have shown admirable resilience and flexibility, and their learning and development continues uninterrupted. I am deeply grateful to Erin Maitland for all her help in maintaining as many rhythms and routines as we can. In fact, we would not be able to do this without her.

Our current Main Lesson is Local Surroundings. This is an integrated Science/ Geography/ English Main Lesson. The children are highly absorbed with observing Spring roll over our desert landscape.

The children live spontaneously but deeply in their interaction with the natural world around them. When stories bring more detailed and perceptive insights their interest and observations are slowly schooled while their ability to still live into the phenomena is maintained.  The light and warmth of the sun, the water that comes from the clouds, the wind that carries the seeds, the earth that holds them and the buds of a new blossom are all examples of what might be brought through short stories full of conversations which reveal the inner gestures and the secrets of the world. It is the immediate surroundings that is most important- the flowers where they live, the mountain in the background or the river at the end of the street.  The focus is more on the plant kingdom at this age, although the little creatures that live with the plants are naturally also a part of the story when they are in the school garden or met on bushwalks.(National Steiner Curriculum Frameworks Topic 1.6)

In addition, English skills continue to grow through listening to rich vocabulary and sentence structure and by retelling the stories. Following on from what Teacher Erin had started, the children are focusing on lowercase letter formation and mindful pencil grip and posture. They are taking beautiful care in their Main Lesson books as they copy the group constructed sentences.

As a culmination of this topic and the term, we will be heading out to Desert Park on Wednesday 16th September. A note has gone home that you need to attend to and return please.

I very much look forward to meeting up with you on the dance floor at our Spring Festival Bush Dance on Thursday evening. Bring your family picnic dinner to enjoy on the oval. 5:45pm for a 6pm start.

With care,

Megan x
