Term 3 in Year 4

Dear Grade 4 Parents and Carers,

Welcome back for another exciting term! We hope you enjoyed the winter break, and we're thrilled to dive into Term Three, continuing our journey of learning and growth alongside your child.

Literacy Blocks

In Language Comprehension, our focus this term centres on the novel The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. This literary adventure will drive our Literacy Blocks, guiding students as they build new vocabulary, deepen their background knowledge, and apply comprehension strategies to develop a richer understanding of the text.

In writing, students will draw on what they've learned from our text studies to craft persuasive pieces. Using the structured approach of The Writing Revolution, they will sharpen their skills in identifying and constructing different sentence types. They will also explore how literary devices can enhance and elaborate their writing, transforming basic sentences into vivid imagery for their audience.

In Spelling, students will continue with our new school-wide program, Spelling Mastery. This carefully sequenced program builds spelling skills step-by-step, explicitly teaching patterns, rules, and strategies to help students become confident, accurate spellers. Daily practice and review activities help students consolidate their learning and apply it across their reading and writing. Each session aims to build greater spelling fluency, understanding, and confidence.

Maths

In Mathematics this term, students will continue learning through the Explicit Mathematics Program (EMP), which emphasises clear, step-by-step instruction and regular practice to build confidence and understanding. Daily Review will continue to reinforce key skills and knowledge taught throughout the term. Focus areas include placing and interpreting fractions on a number line, using the vertical algorithm for multiplication, introducing long division, and the vertical algorithm for addition and subtraction. We will also deepen students' understanding of 3D shapes, angles, area, perimeter, and capacity. Additionally, students will complete daily Facts on Fire fluency practice across all operations, with a strong focus on building fluency in multiplication facts.

Units of Work

In Term Three, our unit of work focuses on the three levels of government. Students will build their understanding of the role each level of government plays in everyday life, exploring how decisions are made, the difference between rules and laws, how candidates are fairly elected, and the different forms of government. Students will also complete a health unit centred on caring for their physical and mental health, and how being part of a community supports wellbeing. Finally, students will take part in a water safety program covering safety in and around pools, natural water environments (beach, river, lake), and sun safety.

Homework

Homework began in Week 2 and is posted in Google Classroom, where students can access the homework slideshow and record their work using their Google account.

Homework for Year 4 students consists of:

  • 20 minutes of reading, 5 nights a week
  • Practising two maths concepts of their choice through Essential Assessment

Warm regards,
