IMPORTANCE OF ONE-ON-ONE TIME

In today's busy world, finding uninterrupted time with your child can feel challenging. Between school, work, sport, extracurricular activities, and household responsibilities, meaningful connection can move down your priority list. Yet even small amounts of dedicated one-on-one time can have a powerful impact on a child's wellbeing.

When children have a parent's or caregiver's undivided attention, they feel valued, heard, and important. These moments strengthen relationships, build trust, and create a safe space for children to share their thoughts, worries, and successes. Regular one-on-one time can also boost a child's self-esteem and sense of belonging.

Importantly, quality matters more than quantity. Just 10 to 15 minutes of focused attention each day can make a difference. During this time, put away phones and distractions and allow your child to lead the activity. Whether it's reading a book, taking a walk, playing a game, drawing together, or simply chatting about their day, the message is clear: "You matter, and I enjoy spending time with you."

Simple ideas to connect with your child

  • Share a hot chocolate and talk about the best part of the day

  • Take a short walk together

  • Read a book side by side

  • Play a board game or card game

  • Cook a simple meal together

  • Draw, colour, or create something together

  • Have a special weekly parent and child date

Conversation Starters

Try asking:

  • What made you smile today?

  • What was something challenging today?

  • Who did you help today?

  • What are you looking forward to this week?

  • What is something you're proud of?

When children feel connected to the important adults in their lives, they are better equipped to manage challenges, build resilience, and thrive both emotionally and socially.

Children may not always remember what we said, but they will remember how we made them feel. A few minutes of focused attention each day can have a lasting impact.
