CBL Expo: Prep to Two, Pledge to Do!

In the last week of school, our Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students will be showcasing their learning about animals and the ways we can use our power to make a difference in protecting them. Parents will be invited to join us for this special afternoon on Thursday 17th September. Please bring a gold coin and this money will be donated to Zoos Victoria.

Hats

With the warmer weather returning, it’s time for hats to come back to school!

Grade 1 and 2 students are reminded to bring their school hat back to school if they haven’t already and to make sure they are wearing it during outdoor activities and break times.

Please encourage students to get into the habit of having their hat ready each day so they can enjoy their time outside. Hats on, play on! ☀️

R U OK? Day

On Thursday 10 September, we will recognise R U OK? Day, an important opportunity to remind students about the power of checking in with others and having meaningful conversations.

iPad Reminders

Our iPad program works best when all students who have their own iPad bring it to school each day. Please remind your child to pack their iPad in their school bag every morning.

Holidays

If you are intending on taking a holiday during the school term, please make sure you inform your classroom teacher and discuss an absence plan.

CBL EXPO Prep to Two, Pledge to Do! - As we prepare for students to plan and create a display of their choice, they may choose to make a diorama or another 3D model. To support their creativity, we ask families to please keep any suitable recyclable materials at home, such as cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, paper rolls and other clean packaging. These materials will need to be brought in from home for students to use in their creations. You may wish to have a discussion with your child regarding the types of materials they will need. Thank you for your support.

Please note: This will be entirely created during school hours, so there is no need to complete any part of this activity at home.

CURRICULUM

Literacy

Thank you for your continued support with home reading. Reading together each night, even for just 10–15 minutes, is one of the most valuable ways you can support your child's learning. Regular reading helps build confidence, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, while also fostering a lifelong love of books. We encourage students to continue recording their reading in their log books each evening, as this helps us celebrate their efforts and monitor their progress. Thank you for partnering with us to make reading a positive and enjoyable part of your child's daily routine.

Grade 1

This week, students will be learning about the different ways we can represent the /ē/ and /ō/ sounds when reading and spelling. Our focus will be on ee, ea and ey for the /ē/ sound, and oa, ow and oe for the /ō/ sound. Students will practise recognising these spelling patterns in words, reading them accurately and applying them when spelling and writing.

Grade 2 This week, students will continue building their phonics and spelling knowledge by focusing on the y → i rule and the ar, or and our patterns representing the /ə/ sound. Students will practise applying the y → i rule when adding suffixes to words, while also reading and spelling words containing ar, or and our. Through explicit teaching, word reading and spelling practice, students will strengthen their ability to recognise these patterns and apply them accurately when reading and writing.

Mentor Texts:

This week, students will use the text Walk of the Whales to strengthen their inferring and questioning skills. We will explore how readers can look beyond the information directly stated in a text by using clues, illustrations and their own knowledge to make thoughtful inferences. Students will also practise asking and answering questions before, during and after reading to deepen their understanding and encourage curiosity about the text.

Maths

Grade One Students

Grade 1 students will explore sharing and groups of through hands-on learning experiences. Using concrete materials, students will build and represent equal groups, developing their understanding of how quantities can be organised and counted in groups. They will use practical materials to make, describe and compare groups, building a strong foundation for future multiplication and division concepts.

What can you do at home?

Families can help students develop their sharing and groups of concepts through everyday activities involving equal groups. Using small objects such as Lego, toys, buttons or snacks, encourage students to make groups and count how many there are altogether.

Grade Two Students

Grade 2 students will be learning about operations such as; addition, subtraction, sharing and groups of. Students will be revisiting these concepts through worded problems and arrays.

What can you do at home?

Continue working through allocated Mathletics tasks that have been assigned to your child. Practice skip counting by 2, 5, 10's from a non-zero starting point.

R U OK?DAY

Thursday, 10 September 2026 is R U OK?

While this day provides an important opportunity to check in with others, we know that the people around us experience life’s ups and downs every day.

Throughout the week, we will be encouraging students to think about how we can support one another, notice when someone might need help, and take the time to ask, “Are you OK?” We will focus on the importance of kindness, connection, listening and knowing that it is always okay to reach out to a trusted adult when we need support.

Taking just a few minutes each day to talk about emotions, challenges and successes helps children build confidence, resilience and a strong understanding of the strategies they can use to support their wellbeing both at school and at home.

CBL

Students will explore different habitats and investigate what the terms endangered, threatened, and vulnerable mean, discovering how some living things come to be at risk. Through stories, discussions and hands-on learning, students will consider the concept of power and reflect on questions such as: What is power? What responsibilities come with having power? How does our power impact living things? Throughout the term, students will be encouraged to think deeply about our essential question: How does our power influence our choices? As they build their understanding, students will explore how the choices we make can help protect and care for the environments and living things around us.
