Level 5 & 6

Welcome to Week 9!
Come along to Movie Night
Reminders:
Hats
With the warmer weather returning, it’s time for hats to come back to school!
Grade 5 and 6 students are reminded to bring their school hat back to school if they haven’t already and to make sure they are wearing it during outdoor activities and break times.
Please encourage students to get into the habit of having their hat ready each day so they can enjoy their time outside. Hats on, play on! ☀️
R U OK? Day
On Thursday 10 September, we will recognise R U OK? Day, an important opportunity to remind students about the power of checking in with others and having meaningful conversations.
Literacy
Reading
Our Literature Circle rotations continue as students build their independence in reading, completing their assigned roles and sharing their thinking with their group. This week, we will finish reading Part Four of Wonder, told from Jack Will’s perspective. As we approach the end of our Literature Circle rotations in Week 10, students are looking forward to celebrating their reading by watching the Wonder movie and making connections between the novel and its film adaptation.
Writing
We have now finalised our poetry unit and are super proud of our Grade 5 and 6 students personal poetry collection. We are moving into a new focus on elevating our narrative and creative writing. Students will identify common mistakes authors often make and explore strategies for improving their own writing. We will challenge ourselves to take our writing to the next level by making purposeful choices with vocabulary, sentence structure, description and figurative language to create engaging pieces for our readers.
Phormes
This week in Phormes, we are beginning a new focus on Latin number elements. Students will explore une, bi/du, tri, quad and quart, investigating their meanings and identifying how these elements appear in familiar and unfamiliar words. Through this work, students will continue to strengthen their understanding of morphology and use word parts to support their spelling, vocabulary and understanding of word meanings.
What you can do at home:
- Ask your child about Jack Will’s perspective in Wonder and how hearing his point of view has changed or added to their understanding of the story.
- Encourage your child to share some of the strategies they are learning to elevate their creative writing, and discuss how they could make a simple sentence or story idea more engaging.
- Identify words containing our Latin number elements – une, bi/du, tri, quad and quart – and discuss how the meaning of each element connects to the whole word.
Maths
For the remainder of Term 3, Grade 5 and 6 students will put their maths skills to the test as we revisit key concepts from Terms 1, 2 and 3! Through a variety of revision activities and challenges, students will have the opportunity to show what they know, strengthen their problem-solving skills and build confidence across the different areas of mathematics we have explored this year. This will help to provide consolidation of key concepts as we head into Term 4.
What you can do at home:
- Revisit key concepts from earlier in the year through everyday opportunities, such as working with fractions and decimals, measuring around the home, calculating money or practising mental computation strategies.
CBL
Big Idea: How can we use our power to create positive change globally?
Guiding Questions:
- What is economic power?
- What makes a business successful?
- How can we use resources responsibly?
How can people use their ideas, skills and resources to improve the world around them?
Challenge: Create a small business, social enterprise or circular economy initiative that generates a profit for good.
Wellbeing
On Thursday 10 September, we will recognise R U OK? Day, an important opportunity to remind students about the power of checking in with others and having meaningful conversations. Due to our Grade 5/6 Hoop Time commitments, students will participate in R U OK? Day learning activities within their individual classes during their scheduled Wellbeing lesson. We will explore how to recognise when someone might need support and how a simple conversation can make a difference.
What you can do at home:
- Use R U OK? Day as an opportunity to talk about the importance of checking in with friends and family.
- Discuss what they could say or do if they noticed someone wasn’t acting like themselves.
