5/6K - A Terrific Term 2!

Year 5/6 have enjoyed a busy Term 2 filled with learning, growth and memorable experiences. We hope you enjoy reading their reflections on various aspects of school life at SJV.

Youth Leadership Program:

Sanuli: During Term 2, we've been doing a public speaking program called the Youth Leadership Program! This program is fun because you can say a speech, an evaluation or even an ‘Off the Cuff' speech. My favourite one to do is evaluations because you have to give praise, input and then another praise. You can get an award by getting voted by people!

Lisa: There is a lady called Mrs De Geest. Some students thought she was really funny in her teaching skills while she was telling us how to be better speakers in the future. Mrs De Geest tells us that we have to do two speeches and she will see who is the best speaker. There are four trophies that students can win in the final session. She always encourages us to have eye contact and a loud voice which will help us in High School.

Sia: This wonderful and caring teacher Mrs De Geest has taught us how to speak in public; we learned a lot and many of us have become confident public speakers because of her. We also did speeches about ‘All About Me’ and ‘Speaking with Passion.’ We are so lucky to have Mrs De Geest at our school.

Camp:

Camp was at Phillip Island Adventure resort. It took 1 hour and 30 minutes to get there, but we stopped at San Remo to watch the pelican feeding. Throughout the day, we did activities in groups like the twin flying fox, the giant swing, team rescue, canoeing, low ropes and camp cooking. One day we got to go to A Maze’N’Things’ to go through mazes, puzzles and play mini golf. For free time we played gaga ball, human foosball, basketball, volleyball and football. On the first night, we did a Trivia Night. There were 5 topics: Music, General Knowledge, Riddles and the teacher baby photos, the ‘Golden Oldies’ won. On the second night, we had a Movie Night. We ate popcorn and lollipops and we watched the movie “School Of Rock.” On the first night of camp, we had really good spaghetti and delicious garlic bread. On the second night we had chicken with salad and potatoes. Overall, we learned how to survive by ourselves, how to roast a marshmallow, we can be very encouraging and we’re not so afraid of heights!

Gala Days:

In Term 2, all the 5/6’s participated in the Winter Gala day sports. The sports were Soccer, Netball, AFL 9’s and Softball. We practiced before the game for over 2 weeks. We played the sports that were selected from our preferences for two Fridays in a row. All of the 5/6’s were showing good sportsmanship all around the other schools. We all played our best so we could win and come to school with good news. We took a bus to our destination. We competed against many different schools and it went amazingly well.

Class Mass - Friendship:

For our Class Mass, our theme was ‘Friendship’. Our class has reflected on the friendships that mean the most for us. Friendships bring us love, gratitude, loyalty, trust and the qualities we admire most in a friend. This mass went incredibly well, showing us that friendship is the key thing to life. As one of the readings said "Friendship is what causes the greatest love and hurts of our lives, It is the best gift we can give one another." Our morning tea afterwards was a great reminder of how well the mass went. We shared laughter and joy, while it reminded us of how important friendship really is. It was amazing how many people brought in a plate to share with us all. We were so full to the point we felt like we didn’t need to eat for the next week! It definitely was a mass that will never be forgotten. Thank you Miss Kinnish for all your hard work behind the scenes. It really paid off in the end. Overall, I feel that our Class Mass was one of the most memorable of the year, because of the deeper meaning. This truly created a memory that all of 5/6K will cherish in our lives. Thank you so much to everyone who came to support us. Yes, speaking in front of many people can be scary and overwhelming but every one of us did their reading/ prayer very well. Thank you!

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, we have learned about shapes, decimals, fractions and how to convert fractions to decimals. Learning about decimals and shapes helps us measure exact amounts, understand size and space and solve everyday problems like handling money or following recipes. This is useful for many things in the future.

Democracy:

We have been learning about the Australian Government and Democracy for 6 weeks. It has been a journey for all of us. We all had a picture in our heads of us voting, being a great citizen and doing all the right things. We mainly talked about how democracy worked and the three levels of government which are Federal (only one in Australia), State (One in each state) and local (One in each community). We also learned about the most well known Australian prime ministers and what they have done for Australia. We also learned more about Kevin Rudd's speech about saying sorry to the First Nations peoples and found out he was the first Australian Prime Minister to do that!
