Prep

During our unit on "Finding features" the students have explored the varying external features of animals, identify the distinguishing external features by which some animals can be grouped and explored the depiction of animal features by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Last week we explored the varying movements of animals based on their features and that humans have some features the same as other animals. There was a lot of searching for mini beasts in the yard and looking at their features.

1/2s

The 1/2 students have been busy investigating how everyday materials can be changed in different ways. They explored the effects of heat by melting chocolate, Zooper-Doopers, making popcorn, and examining how eggs change when cooked. Through these investigations, students discussed whether the changes were reversible or irreversible. They discovered that melted chocolate could cool and harden again and the Zooper-Dooper can be frozen again making it a reversible change, while popcorn popping and eggs cooking are irreversible changes because they cannot return to their original form. These hands-on experiences were a lot of fun, and some items were able to be eaten.

MUSIC

Students in Prep to 2 are exploring what an orchestra is and the different families of instruments that make up the orchestra. We have looked at the string family in particular, and the Prep students made their own stringed instrument from cups and elastic bands demonstrating how strings vibrate to create sound.

Year 3-6s have been playing percussion instruments in drum circles, using tuned percussion instruments ( xylophones & glockenspiels) to improvise and create melodies.

We have also been inspired by watching snippets of the ABC's 'The Piano'.
