Celebrating Book Week at Oatlands
What a wonderful Book Week we had! Our school was buzzing with plenty of excitement as we celebrated our love of reading together.
Throughout the week, students participated in a wide range of engaging reading and writing activities inspired by books. Classrooms were filled with opportunities to explore favourite stories, discover new characters and authors and share ideas about the books we love. It was wonderful to see students so enthusiastically embrace the many ways that books can inspire our imaginations and creativity.
One of the highlights of Book Week again this year was our Battle of the Books competition. This much-loved competition sees books go head-to-head, with students eagerly following the results each week. The excitement builds as everyone gathers at assembly to discover which book has won and, perhaps even more importantly, which book has been “knocked out”! The students absolutely love the suspense, and it is fantastic to see how passionately they cheer for their favourite books.
Our Buddy Booknics were another special part of the week. Junior and senior students came together over a picnic lunch to share one of their favourite books. It was lovely to see students enjoying stories together, talking about books and recommending their favourites to their buddies.
A small group of enthusiastic Grade 6 students also took on the challenge of writing a picture book for our annual Book Trail. The pages of their book are displayed in different locations around the school, with students using a map to navigate from page to page as they follow the story. This year's story, The Sports Storeroom, taps into children's love of all things sporting while delivering a strong message about inclusion and friendship. The students have worked incredibly hard to create a story that is engaging, humorous and meaningful, and the result is absolutely amazing! Families are invited to view the completed book, which is proudly on display in the Grade 6 foyer.
The week culminated in our annual Book Showcase, which this year had a special focus: bringing well-loved picture books to life through Readers Theatre. Students took familiar stories and transformed them into performances, writing scripts to demonstrate their reading, oral language and acting skills. Some classic picture books were brought to life in wonderfully entertaining ways, much to the enjoyment of our audience. We were incredibly proud of the confidence and creativity our students demonstrated as they stepped into character and shared their performances.
While Book Week provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate books and reading, our ultimate goal extends far beyond one week each year. We want every child to experience the joy, wonder, humour and adventure that books can offer and, most importantly, to develop a lifelong love of reading.
