Junior Learning Community

Year 2
It was lovely welcoming our mothers and special ladies to school on Friday, to celebrate Mother’s Day. The children enjoyed sharing their leaning space with you all. We hope you all had a very special day on Sunday.
We are noticing in our morning check ins that there are many children not reading at home. Reading at home is a wonderful way for the children to practice the skills taught in the classroom during their literacy learning. A friendly reminder to please sign your child’s reading diary each time they read. In addition to reading, the children have all received a new list of tricky words for Term 2. These will be taught in the classroom over the duration of Term 2. We would like children to practice writing and spelling these words at home.
Religion:
Children continue to learn about Pentecost and the symbols related to this story. In particular, the meaning behind the flame and the wind represents the Holy Spirit. Students have been learning to understand the Good News message as the teachings of Jesus shared with others through the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Numeracy:
Students have completed the Measurement unit of work with an assessment task on Monday. Children measured the length of objects in the classroom by using uniform informal units. such as icy pole sticks, cubes and paper clips. When measuring, children ensured that they were placing these objects end to end to measure accurately. Last week is started working on math fluency, this involves the children solving simple addition facts to 10 working on the automaticity of this skill. Our next mathematic unit is about addition and subtraction.
Literacy:
In comprehension, children are learning to use the skill of visualising to assist them with understanding a text. In grammar, children are learning about past, present and irregular verbs. Children have enjoyed exploring the story book ‘Collecting Colour’ and deepening their understanding further about the Aboriginal Culture.
Inquiry Learning:
Children continue to familiarise themselves with the Laptop Matrix as part of their learning in our ICT Inquiry unit, and they were very excited to begin using the new computers. Students learnt how to login safely with their personal login details and began to use the app ‘paint’ to practice using the keyboard and touch screen to create their own personal masterpiece.
Mass:
Year 2 will be attending Mass on Friday on 22nd May at 11.30. Our family and friends are welcome to celebrate with us.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email us or come in and see us.
With thanks,
Mrs. Nye and Mrs. Hyde.
YEAR 1
Over the past two weeks, our Grade Ones have been working incredibly hard and showing great enthusiasm in their learning!
In Literacy, students have been exploring new letter patterns, including:
- ‘ue’ and ‘ew’ making the /oo/ and /yoo/ sounds
- ‘ar’ making the /ar/ sound
- ‘or’ and ‘ore’ making the /aw/ sound
They have also been learning how to add ‘s’ to the end of nouns to create plurals.
We have popped in some laminated tricky word sheets into your child’s blue reader folders for them to practice reading and spelling at home.
In Mathematics, we have completed our unit on counting and place value and have now moved on to measurement. Students have been learning how to informally compare the measurements of different items using everyday language and observations.
As part of our Inquiry learning, students have enjoyed using our new school laptops. They have been learning how to log in independently and explore the Paint application, experimenting with its different tools and functions to create digital pictures.
