Creating Technology-Free Times and Spaces

Creating regular technology-free times and spaces at home can help children develop healthy routines and make time for other important activities. Families could establish a consistent homework and screen-time schedule, such as completing homework and reading before recreational screen time. Try having technology-free times during meals, in the hour before bed and when spending time together as a family. Keeping devices out of bedrooms overnight can also support better sleep. Practical strategies such as using a family charging station, setting clear expectations about when devices can be used and giving children a 10-minute warning before screen time finishes can make these routines easier to maintain.

Healthy Screen-Time Habits

Healthy screen-time habits are about finding a balance between technology and the many other activities children need for their development and wellbeing. Encourage children to read physical books, play board or card games, complete puzzles, draw, build, help with household tasks and spend time outdoors. Make getting fresh air and exercise part of the daily routine by going for a family walk, riding bikes, visiting the park or simply playing outside. Families can also try having a “screen-free afternoon” or “device-free Sunday” from time to time. Most importantly, model healthy technology habits by putting your own devices away during family time and showing children that there are plenty of enjoyable things to do without a screen.
