Year 4 in Term 1
In Reading, students have been developing their comprehension skills of both fiction and non-fiction texts through the use of predicting, making connections, inferring, synthesising and summarising. Students have investigated different genres and the many subcategories within these.
In Writing this term, students have been building their narrative skills by exploring and using different types of figurative language such as similes, onomatopeia, metaphors, hyperbole and personification. Students transferred these skills into the planning, drafting and editing of a narrative. Students have also been learning about persuasive techniques and writing expositions to persuade the reader. Students have used the Lucas Primary School Big Ideas to help them justify their opinions as well as persuasive devices to become more convincing.
Numeracy this term has been active and hands-on as students have been exploring many different types of measurement such as length, capacity, mass and temperature both in and out of the classroom. Students have been estimating and then measuring to find out an accurate answer using a range of different measuring instruments including 30cm rulers, tape measures, digital and analogue scales and trundle wheels.

This Term’s Integrated Studies topic is Civics and Citizenship and in preparation for their upcoming excursion to the Ballarat Mechanics Institute, students have been learning about different civic institutes and their importance and role in the community. The Year 4 students will be partaking in a guided tour of the building, street scavenger hunt and building a model village.
