Numeracy
Students are developing fluency with addition and subtraction by using a range of mental and written strategies. They are building confidence in solving problems accurately and efficiently while explaining their mathematical thinking.
A great game to play at home is ‘Get Out of My House!’. This game helps students practise their addition and subtraction fluency while also reinforcing their understanding of sequencing numbers (before and after).
Materials:
- Get Out of my house Game Board
- 7 counters per player of the same colour (eg. 7 red, 7 yellow)
- A - 10 cards (from a deck of cards)
‘Get Out of my House 2.0’ is a great variation to help students identify numbers before and after the card they flip over.
Here are some great questions you can ask as you are playing.
Get Out of My House Questions:
“What’s the other number you can make?” (When children start playing, they may only focus on what they can make by adding the two cards and fail to consider the subtraction option).
“Explain to me how you got __?”
“Do you think it is better to add or subtract the two numbers? Why?”
“Is it a good idea to place lots of tokens on the one square? Why/why not?” “What would you do differently next time you played?”
Get Out of My House 2.0 Questions:
“What’s the other number you can place your counter on?” (Students might initially only focus on what number comes after their card and neglect to consider what comes before).
“Is it a good idea to place lots of tokens on the one square? Why/why not?”; “What would you do differently next time you played?”
