Year 5/6 Team News

Hello Year 5/6 families, 

We have enjoyed a lovely, but very busy, term in Grade 5/6. We now have time for some much needed rest over the break. 

There are 2 events that require action on Compass asap, 5/6 Parliament Incursion which begins during Week 1 and also Winter Sports and Alternative Program that requires both permission and payment to attend. 

What's Coming up in the Classroom in the first 2 weeks of Term 2:

Reading: Students will start the term by reading and comprehending texts relating to the 3 Levels of Government in Australia. We will also be introduced to our new class novel, Black Cockatoo. We will begin with reciprocal roles of predicting about the text and summarising what we initially learn. 

Writing: We will start the term by learning about persuasive text features and modality. In Week 2, the students will be presented a 'Debate' showcased by the 5/6 team. This will help them prepare for their Term 2 persuasive writing and speaking and listening assessment in the form of a debate. 

Numeracy: Students will begin the term with a large unit, 4 Operations. This will be delievered in the form of an excel continuum that allows students time within a lesson to access material and track learning goals. During the first fortnight we will explore addition and subtraction, with a strong focus on dissecting worded problems. 

Inquiry: We are jumping straight into our very exciting unit for the term, based on how government operates and the role of parliament. We begin with the first of 2 incursions, which help our students experience key roles and processes hands on. This will help base our learning and inquiry project for the term. The second incursion takes place in Week 3. 

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: In Term 2, Willy Kids are Respectful. During Weeks 1 & 2, Willy Kids are Kind. We will look at small acts of kindness and practise ways to THINK before we speak. 

Term 2 Interschool Sport:

Week 1: We start with training for our new sports to ensure we are match ready for Friday in Week 2.
