Year One Team News
with Steph and Emma
Congratulations on making it through to the end of Term 1 in 2025. What a huge year we’ve had already! The Year One team would like to wish all Grade One families a Happy Easter and safe holidays - we know you all deserve the long two week break! We look forward to hearing about the wonderful adventures you’ve had over the holidays and catching up with you all upon your return in Term 2.
Next term we are starting our Parent Helper program for Reading. Every Tuesday and Thursday, we will have 1 parent helper who reads with students from the class out in the red brick hall from 9am - 11am. It's a lovely way to build relationships within our little class community, whilst also helping students with their decoding, fluency and comprehension. If this is something you're interested in, please complete the Parent Volunteer Induction on Compass and make sure you have a Working with Children Check on file at the office.
There will be a schedule up outside the classroom. Please feel free to pop your name on the list. I'll start putting a timetable together next term and will share out the sessions depending on availability and interest.
If there's a particular date you're interested in next term, please let me know, as I'm only able to fit in 1 parent per session.
Curriculum Focus: Weeks 1 - 2
Reading: Term 2 will see the beginning of stage 7.2 in the Little Learners Love Literacy program. We will begin by looking at the phoneme /ar/ represented by the grapheme ar.
Writing: We will begin the term with letter formation, sentence structure and narrative writing.
Numeracy: The Year 1s will continue to explore partitioning of numbers and counting to 120.
Inquiry: Our big question next term is “How and why do we care for animals and how do animals care for us?”
Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships:
We will begin Term 2 with the focus that “Willy Kids are Kind”. Willy Kids show kindness by including others in our games, helping our friends when they are hurt or sad, and being friendly to everyone.
Specialists
Term 2, all Grade 1s will attend Specialist classes. These include Visual Art, Music, French and Physical Education.

Animal Land Excursion
Our excursion to Animal Land will be happening on Wednesday the 6th of May (Week 3). Students will bring their school bags on the excursion with their packed recess and lunch. They will need to bring a drink bottle and their hats. We will need parent helpers for this event, if you are interested in helping out please let your child's classroom teacher know. All parent helps must have completed the Parent Volunteer Induction on Compass and make sure you have a Working with Children Check on file at the office.
Warm regards,
The Grade One Team – Steph Keswick (1K) & Emma Chang-Kum (1C)
