Prep: Students have been introduced to the rhythm names of ta, ti-ti and za. They have read, said and played animal names with different rhythms and have created their own Animal Rhythm composition which they have shared.

Year 1: Students have been trying out some solfege challenges where they hear and read a melody pattern then copy it back. They have also learnt to play a new rhythm called a ti tika. Students have played a song on the marimbas called “Zimbole” (Peace) using this new rhythm pattern.

Year 2: Students have continued working on the song “Poor Old Cinderella” on the marimbas. They have also learnt about the bass guitar which features in the song and have replicated a drum kit beat on the untuned percussion instruments.
Grade 3/4: Students have created and shared a rap verse based on friendship. They selected to begin their verse with a verse starter or one of their own choosing. Students then had to create lyrics about what friendship meant to them ensuring that they rhymed lines 1 & 2 and 3 & 4.
Grade 5/6: Students have continued to work on the post chorus section of the Proclaimer’s song “I’m gonna be (500 miles)”. They have been able to play together as a class band the chorus and post chorus of the song while playing the melody, tenor or bass part. They also started creating a parody from a song mad lib which they will learn to play on the keyboard next term.

We have some lovely news to end term 1!
Our amazing 5/6 students, who volunteered for art club this term, have won the Hobsons Bay 5x7 Art Competition!!!
Well done to all the talented students that gave up their lunch times to create these amazing art pieces. The exhibition is open to the public from 11th-30th April at the Louis Joel Gallery in Altona. This is an excellent holiday activity for everyone to explore the many talented artists in our community. The presentation for our school section will be on Saturday 11th April at 2:00pm. All are welcome to help me accept our first-place award which is a $200 voucher to Atelier Supplies. I look forward to finding some fun supplies for us to work with during our art sessions. I’ve included some photos of the talented artists art pieces from our 2026 entry.

Art smocks
Just a reminder to bring in your Art smocks. Please hand them into your classroom teacher for storage. I recommend an old, oversized t-shirt or shirt with your child’s name on it.
We are looking for…..
To help with the creative process, we are asking for some materials that you may no longer need and would be happy to donate to the art room where we will turn them into magnificent art pieces. Some things we are looking for are wool, old house paint brushes, newspapers, shoe boxes (in good condition) and empty 1.5litre fizzy drink bottles (washed). So, if you are doing a clean out and have these items can you please drop them off at the Art Room. Thanks so much for your support!

I hope you all have an enjoyable break.
Warm regards,
Marcia Evans
Term 1 has been a standout term for sport and Physical Education at Williamstown Primary School.
Across all year levels, students have shown significant growth in confidence, skill development and teamwork, consistently embracing challenges and supporting one another throughout the term. It has been particularly pleasing to see students take pride in their improvement and approach each session with a willingness to learn and persist.
Our junior students have built strong movement foundations, developing balance, coordination and confidence in shared spaces. In the middle years, students have refined their control, timing and overall movement efficiency, showing increased consistency across a range of skills. Our senior students have led the way through a focused athletics program, demonstrating clear improvement in pacing, endurance and running technique.
Across the term, students have also developed their understanding of effort, resilience and how to apply themselves in both individual and team-based contexts. These habits are central to building a positive and successful sporting culture at Williamstown Primary School and will continue to underpin our program moving forward.
Sport Update
Term 1 has also been a fantastic period of competition and achievement for our students.
Our School Swimming Carnival was a highlight, showcasing strong House spirit, participation and a willingness from students to challenge themselves in the water. This was followed by an excellent performance at the District Swimming Carnival, where Williamstown Primary School finished second overall in a highly competitive field.
At Division level, our students continued to represent the school with pride, determination and outstanding sportsmanship. We were thrilled to see several students progress even further, with Jason T, Danica G and the 9/10 Boys relay team qualifying for the Western Metropolitan Region finals — an exceptional achievement.
Congratulations also to our Year 5/6 interschool sport teams, who represented the school with great effort, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the term.
To finish the term, Cross Country trials were completed, with students demonstrating resilience and a strong commitment to effort. It was particularly pleasing to see so many students push themselves outside their comfort zone and support their peers throughout the trials. Congratulations to all students who have been selected to represent the school next term.
Overall, it has been a term defined by effort, growth and pride in representing Williamstown Primary School.
Warm regards,
Paddy Gallivan
