How to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses this Winter
There is an increased risk of respiratory illness during the winter months.
In Victoria, there has been 2.5 times the number of COVID-19 cases in April and May this year, compared with the same period in 2024, and hospitalisations have been increasing. Influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases are also increasing.
Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and others – it is never too late to get vaccinated.
How to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses:
- wash or sanitise your hands thoroughly and regularly, particularly before and after touching your face
- cough or sneeze into your elbow
- use air purifiers
- maximise external ventilation
- stay home if unwell and consult your GP or Nurse-on-Call as needed
- stay up to date with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.
