Data That Tells a Story

Recently, I was reading an article by educational consultant and data expert Dr Selena Fisk, who wrote, "Data is a thinking tool, not a judging tool" (Fisk, 2026, para. 3). This simple statement captures an important belief that is shaping our approach to teaching and learning at Leighland Christian School.

Every child is uniquely created in God's image, with individual gifts, abilities and potential. As a Christian school, we believe that every student has a story worth knowing. While relationships are always at the heart of our work, quality data helps us better understand each child's learning journey. It allows us to identify strengths, recognise areas for growth, and ensure that every student is known, supported and challenged appropriately.

At Leighland, data is never used to define a child or compare one student with another. Instead, it helps us ask thoughtful questions: What is this student doing well? Where are they making progress? What barriers might be impacting their learning? What can we do differently to help them flourish?

We are committed to using a range of assessment data to inform our teaching practices and the delivery of learning programs across the school. By carefully analysing student achievement, teachers can make informed decisions about instruction, provide targeted support where needed, and extend students who are ready for additional challenge.

Importantly, we celebrate growth. Whether that growth is large or small, visible or gradual, every step forward represents learning worth acknowledging. We also recognise that when the data tells us something is not working as effectively as it could, it provides an opportunity to reflect, learn and improve. Rather than seeing this as failure, we view it as valuable information that guides our next steps and strengthens our practice.

Our staff are on an exciting professional learning journey as they continue to develop their confidence in reading, interpreting and responding to student data. This ongoing learning is equipping us to make even more informed decisions that positively impact student outcomes.

We are excited about where this journey will lead us. As we continue to combine professional expertise, meaningful relationships and thoughtful use of data, we look forward to seeing every child grow academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Together with our families, we remain committed to helping each student become all that God has created them to be.
