A Special Book Week Bonus

A Visit fom Brenton E. McKenna

Book Week received a special extension this year, with celebrations continuing into Monday thanks to a visit from acclaimed cartoonist, Brenton E. McKenna. 

A proud Broome local, Brenton is the creator of the popular Ubby's Underdogs and Hairy Holes series, as well as the daily Ole Champ cartoon in The West Australian. As Australia's first Indigenous published graphic novelist, he has played a significant role in promoting Indigenous storytelling through graphic novels.

Brenton presented his engaging My Life in Cartoons workshop to Junior School and Year 9 students, sharing his journey as an artist and reflecting on the remarkable growth in the popularity of graphic novels. He was impressed by Trinity students' enthusiasm for reading and their knowledge of the genre.

Students enjoyed hearing about Brenton's love of storytelling, monsters and ghost stories and how his childhood in Broome inspired his first published works. A highlight of the day was a live Mr Squiggle-inspired drawing demonstration, where Brenton showcased the daily creative exercises he uses to develop his skills and transform simple shapes into imaginative creatures.

Students also attended a lunchtime drop-in illustration session in the Library, where they watched Brenton draw, asked questions, shared their own artwork and gained valuable insights into the life of a professional illustrator.

It was a joy to welcome Brenton to Trinity and share in his passion, humour and creativity. His visit was an inspiring reminder of the power of storytelling and creativity, and we thank him for giving our students such a memorable Book Week experience.
