Earlier this week, our PBL team attended the MACS Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) training day. This was a fantastic opportunity for us to pause and reflect on our school's journey so far. It was incredibly affirming to look back at our implementation process and recognise just how much we have already accomplished as a community to establish a safe, respectful, and resilient learning environment.
A key takeaway from the day focused on the concept of error correction. The core idea here is that we should teach behaviour in the exact same way that we approach academics. For instance, if a child struggles with a strategy in Mathematics, we don't punish them; we gently correct them, guide them, and explicitly teach them the right approach. Behavior is no different. When a student isn't displaying a desired behavior, our role is to view it as a learning gap and correct it with the same instructional care we use in the classroom.
The next major milestone in our PBL journey will be the creation of a Behavior Flowchart. This will be a flow chart for staff and students that will clearly define and split student behaviors into two categories: Minor (managed directly by the classroom teacher through restating, reminding and re-teaching opportunities) and Major (referred to and managed by the school leadership team).
The behaviour flowchart will be used directly alongside the school's behaviour matrix. It will ensure consistent, fair and predictable responses across the entire school. We look forward to collaborating with our staff to develop this flowchart and will continue to share our progress with you as these next stages come to life.
