Library News

Hello everyone and welcome to Term 2!

It’s been a big start to the term; the Premiers’ Reading Challenge is underway, with all students from years 7-10 registered and many already logging their books on the Challenge website. Students in years 7-9 need to read 15 books, of which at least 10 have to befrom the Challenge booklist and 5 can be their own choice; students in year 10need to read 15 books as well, of which 5 must be from the booklist and 10 canbe their own choice. The booklist and all necessary information is located at the website www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge. The Challenge finishes on 4 th September, and the first person from each year level to finish will win a canteen voucher!

ANZAC Day:

ANZAC Day was commemorated in the Library with an excellent display, put together by the marvellous Library monitors Lily S and Sol Y, both in Year 9. Our special guest, Mr Kevin Hillier, was very impressed and has offered to lend us ANZAC memorabilia from the Frankston RSL for our Remembrance Day display and next year’s ANZAC Day display as well. We are thrilled by this, and very grateful indeed.

ELC Visits:

We have been delighted to welcome ten tiny visitors to the Library for a Special Storytime on Mondays! Our very cute neighbours have listened to Mrs Boxall read Hunting For Dragons by Bruce Whatley, and Dewey: There’s a Catin the Library! by Vicky Myron. All parties are very much enjoying these visits; we hope to involve our VET students and start a reading buddies program too!

National Simultaneous Storytime:

On Wednesday the 27 th May, the ELC children will be making a special visit, because that is the National Simultaneous Storytime; at 12 pm, schools and libraries across Australia will all be reading Luna Roo: the Kangaroo Baller by Adam Jackson & Adrian Lloyd! If you or your class would like to come and havea story read to you, please do. It’s a great event; last year there were over 2 million participants across Australia!

First Nations Australia Collection:

The non-fiction collection at McClelland is huge and has many hidden gems, which Mrs Boxall and the Library monitors are trying to bring to light. Many books about the First Nations of Australia have been tagged with the new subject heading, and have had the Aboriginal flag sticker put on their spines, sothat they are easily identifiable. We hope that this will increase their visibility, as there are many books here that are not readily available on this topic elsewhere, which have been acquired over the years.

Book Club:

The Book Club is continuing to meet and discuss our interesting books. Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief was a hit, and the thought provoking Never Let Me Go brought up many ethical considerations. It’s always great hearing other points of view about our readings!

See you in the Library!
