University of Melbourne Creative Careers Excursion

Recently, Art and Science students were invited to participate in a fully subsidised University of Melbourne SPP program, Creative Directions: Transdisciplinary Career Days, designed for students in Years 7–10. The program encouraged students to think about future pathways by exploring the connections between art, science, and emerging careers in creative industries.
Students spent a full day at the University of Melbourne, visiting both the Science Gallery Melbourne and the Potter Museum of Art. Through guided tours and interactive learning experiences, they were able to engage with contemporary exhibitions that sit at the intersection of science, technology, and artistic practice. This allowed students to see how different disciplines overlap in real-world contexts and how ideas can develop across multiple fields.
A key part of the program was a speculative career mapping workshop, where students explored possible future pathways and considered the wide range of roles available within and beyond the creative industries. This hands-on session encouraged students to think creatively about their skills, interests, and potential career directions.
The experience also gave students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a university environment, helping them better understand tertiary study options and future possibilities. It was a valuable day of exploration, inspiration, and connection, broadening students’ awareness of how art and science can work together in innovative and unexpected ways.
