Over 1.1 million people in Australia are living with an eating disorder; countless others are dissatisfied with their bodies. Less than a third of those living with an eating disorder receive treatment or support. Butterfly is here to help.
FREE WEBINAR for PARENTS/CARERS - RAISING BODYKIND TEENS
About this Session
Adolescence is a time of rapid physical, emotional and social development. Bodies change, peer influence intensifies and young people are increasingly exposed to powerful messages about appearance, weight and worth. Raising BodyKind Teens is a practical session designed to help parents and caregivers understand body image influences during adolescence and build confidence in how to support their teen's body image during this time. The session explores the impact of puberty, comparisons, social media and online environments and everyday language and behaviours, while providing BodyKind strategies for the home. Importantly, the session also supports parent to recognise when concerns may be moving beyond typical teenage behaviour and to understand what to do next.
FACILITATOR – Kate McGill
Kate is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Nutritionist, and Body Image Coach with a passion for helping people to develop healthy, positive relationships with food and their bodies. She facilitates Butterfly's education sessions to students, parents, and educators, and works as a dietitian in Butterfly’s Next Steps program, supporting individuals in recovery from eating disorders. Alongside her work with Butterfly, Kate runs her own nutrition and body image coaching practice, where she empowers clients to make lasting, healthy changes. As a mum to a tween and teen she understands the real-life challenges parents face and brings both professional expertise and personal insight to her work.
By the end of the session, parents and caregivers will have:
- A clear understanding of the main influences on adolescent body image, including puberty, social media, and societal messaging
- Insight into ways to support the physical and emotional changes of puberty in BodyKind ways
- An understanding of how to support teens to be more BodyKind, including comparing less, appreciating differences, focusing on function over appearance, using language which is kind and not linking weight to worth
- Greater confidence in recognising early warning signs that a young person may be struggling with body image or their relationship with food or physical activity
- Ideas for supportive conversations when concerns arise, including when a teen is worried about a friend
Information about referral pathways and resoruces available for parents, including how Butterfly can help.

Parenting is one of the toughest jobs you will ever do, with many challenges that can feel overwhelming at times. It is normal for parents to feel many of these emotions and you are not alone. These sessions will explore how to create space and practice self-care so that it does not feel like another thing to add to your “To Do” list.
