Prep at Burnie

What an incredible beginning it has been for our Prep class. The transition from Kinder to Prep is a massive step for young learners — new routines, new expectations, and a whole new world of independence. Despite all of that, the children have embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, resilience, and a genuine excitement for learning. We are so proud of how confidently they have settled into their new environment and how quickly they have begun to flourish.
In Maths, we have been exploring the numbers 0–10 in depth. The students have engaged in hands‑on activities, games, and creative number crafts designed to strengthen both their number knowledge and their fine motor skills. From building numbers with manipulatives to creating colourful number art, the children have shown curiosity and persistence. It has been wonderful to see them recognise numerals, count with increasing accuracy, and begin to make connections between numbers and real‑life situations. Their confidence is growing every day.
Our English learning has focused on building the foundations of reading and writing, and the progress has been nothing short of amazing. Students have been learning letter sounds, practising correct letter formation, and beginning to blend sounds to read simple words. Their enthusiasm during literacy sessions is contagious, and it’s clear they are proud of what they are achieving.
A highlight of the term has been our class caterpillars. The children watched with fascination as the caterpillars formed chrysalises and eventually transformed into butterflies. This real‑life experience sparked rich discussions, new vocabulary, and plenty of excitement. It has been a beautiful way to connect literacy, science, and wonder.
Perhaps the most heart‑warming part of the term has been watching the children grow as a community. They are kind, considerate, and incredibly supportive of one another. Whether it’s helping a friend pack up, offering encouragement during a tricky task, or celebrating each other’s achievements, this group consistently shows empathy and teamwork. Their ability to look out for one another has created a warm, positive classroom culture where every child feels valued.
We are so excited to see how much they will continue to grow academically, socially, and spiritually throughout the year. If the first weeks are anything to go by, this is going to be a year filled with growth, joy, and countless moments of discovery.
