Child Safety at Leighland Christian School

At Leighland Christian School, caring for children isn’t just something we do—it sits right at the heart of who we are as a Christian community. We believe every child is made in the image of God, uniquely known and deeply valued, and they deserve to learn and grow in an environment where they feel safe, supported, and loved.

 

The Tasmanian Child and Youth Safe Organisations Framework helps guide our ongoing work in this space. When we consider the ways in which we are aiming to keep children safe, I like to think of these three pillars: Safe People, Safe Programs, and Safe Places.

 

Safe People

In every school, but I think particularly here in NW Tasmania, relationships really matter—and our students thrive when the adults around them model integrity, compassion, and genuine care.

 

Safe People are adults who:

  • build trusting and respectful relationships with students

  • genuinely listen to children and take their concerns seriously

  • maintain clear professional boundaries

  • engage in ongoing learning about child safety and wellbeing 

  • uphold the behaviours expected in our school

 

It is our goal that our students will be surrounded by a strong community of Safe People who have their best interests at heart and value their spiritual and physical well-being.

 

Safe Programs

Whether it’s inside a classroom, out on the oval, on an excursion, or in one of our extracurricular programs, every activity at Leighland must be designed with children’s safety—physical, emotional, and spiritual— in mind.

 

Safe Programs include:

  • thoughtful planning and preparation

  • clear risk‑management processes

  • age‑appropriate supervision

  • opportunities for children to ask questions, raise concerns, or give feedback

 

We encourage our students to speak up, contribute their ideas, and help shape a school culture where everyone feels safe and heard. We value input from our student leaders, representative councils – as well as any student who wants to chat – regarding the activities that we run and any concerns they may have.

 

Safe Places

A safe place is more than a set of buildings—it’s a community where children feel they belong.

 

At Leighland, Safe Places include:

  • well‑maintained learning spaces, playgrounds, and equipment

  • clear expectations and requirements for visitors and volunteers

  • environments that support positive behaviour and respectful interactions

  • spaces where children know who they can turn to for help

 

Child safety is something we all share—staff, students, families, and volunteers working side by side. While the Tasmanian Child and Youth Safe Organisations Framework and Child Safety Principles give us strong structures, it’s modelling Christ’s love, respect, humility, and pursuit of justice that shape the heart of our approach.
