Year 5/6 Newsletter – Term 2 week 2

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Term 2! We’re looking forward to a productive term ahead. Below is an overview of what students will be learning, as well as some important dates to keep in mind.

Literacy

This term, students will be reading the class novels Black Cockatoo and Dirrarn. Through these texts, students will complete vocabulary and grammar tasks to deepen their understanding of language and meaning.

We are also beginning Literature Circles, where students will work in small groups to read a shared novel across the term. Each week, students will:

  • Complete tasks analysing different aspects of the text
  • Participate in group discussions to share their thinking and insights

This approach supports collaboration, comprehension, and critical thinking skills.

Mathematics

We have started the term exploring Shape, with a focus on:

  • Transformations (including reflections and translations)
  • Calculating perimeter
  • Finding unknown lengths

Students will be applying their understanding through a range of problem-solving tasks.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry unit this term focuses on Natural Disasters. Students will investigate:

  • Different types of natural disasters
  • Their impacts on communities and environments
  • Ways these events can be managed and prepared for

A homework project has been distributed (also available on Google Classroom). Students are required to create:

  • A diorama representing their chosen natural disaster
  • An information poster explaining key facts

This is a fantastic opportunity for hands-on, creative learning.
